S&W Model 41 Discussion

What happened to your 41???

Wouldn't extract properly, no matter what ammo I tried. CCI Std, Eley, etc, nothing worked. It was literally brand new. Sent to S&W warranty in Quebec in April, haven't seen it since. Numerous calls and e-mails get me no where. Even complained to S&W Corporate, who did follow up and sent a new barrel over a month ago. My current e-mails to the warranty center go unanswered. I am about to phone them again.

Damn that would be annoying. As I posted earlier, I have a nice collection of 41/46s dating from 1958 onward. If I have any issues I work on them myself. I've purchased several parts from Brownells over the past year or so that I can do my own repair work. I went online and found two videos that fully describe the disassembly (https://get.google.com/albumarchive...qOo__xGVbJDPoWKys02P8kIwfal2YTY38H?source=pwa) and reassembly (https://get.google.com/albumarchive...VlyKLlM3LTTqfBHq4Ft3Hfv4PELoVvhWMv?source=pwa) of the 41/46. I took the plunge and took apart what was a troublesome 41 right down to the last screw and fixed it. It's now one of my best shooters. Don't be afraid to take plunge as once you done it, you'll be able to take one apart in around 5 minutes. The reason I do this of course is that S&W is totally unreliable when it comes to repairing and returning their pistols in a timely fashion.

The Model 41 is what I call a very "honest" gun. It's very heavy at the muzzle. This can pay real benefits in stabilizing the sights; helping to keep them aligned once they have settled and produce excellent results if you do your part with the trigger. OTOH, if you have problems with anticipation and move the sights a bit just before the shot breaks, all that mass at the muzzle will create momentum that will create nasty flyers. It needs good trigger and mental control; given that it is one hell of a fine gun.

I have my Model 41 as my "backup gun" and mostly shoot my Matchguns MG-2. A mental error that will create a flyer in the 7 ring with the Model 41 will probably only be a 8 with the MG-2. But when it comes to shooting tens, they're both perfectly capable.

How's the reliability on your MG-2? What year was it made?

I bought my MG-2 new in 2008. It is a complete mutt. It started as a first generation gun with some second generation parts from the dealer. The upper has been back to Italy twice for repairs, and the gun now contains parts from I think the third, fourth and probably fifth generations. It is finally very reliable (knock on wood!) and a joy to shoot. The MG-2 has had quite a development history and lots of modifications to make it reliable over the years. I love it. Lots of cool factor with the tubular magazines, hammer in the upper with what is basically a double sear mechanism, bullet insertion lever and feed ramp, and all kinds of adjustability.

Ditto for the MG2, but one I had was too unreliable. Tried newer parts, solved one problem created another, New mags, same with different brands of ammo. Was more reliable with the shorter Euro ammo and the Specific mags for it, then extracting became a problem. Had it apart so many times the aluminum top screw holes were enlarging.
Dealer, God bless his soul, took it back.
Happy with my reliable Pardini.

When you get it back, if you still have extraction issues, by all means send me the top end. Usually the fix is quite simple.

Sharpi,

Do yourself a favour, don't try to bring a handgun barrel across the border without the proper paperwork.
It has the potential to lend you in all kind of trouble with the ATF/U.S. Customs and Border... Not to mention the store/manufacturer getting in trouble with ITAR

Yes, rules are stupids, but you still need to play by them.

I agree. Not really interested in driving it across the border. I will wait for some retailer to get me one, I suppose. Would like to get one asap though. A shame that it's so difficult.

Ours is a 7" with the compensator  - it has its little foibles. We took it to a club range day and had to put it away - the club was supplying Winchester bulk ammo, and we'd have 2 - 3 misfires out of every mag; royal pain for everybody else as we had to stand there counting steamboats while they were all waiting to go forward and reset targets (yeah, the club is stringent about that but they pretty well have to be). Dunno what's with Winchester rimfire; nobody who's brought a .22 to club days, will buy the stuff anymore. We shot-out the rest of the day with the K-17; not a single misfire with that same Winchester ammo.

Then (just because it was all they had), we bought some Remington Thunderbolt. The 41 shot the smallest group I've ever seen, with that ammo - and you know how accurate they are - her Buckmark started slinging them; we checked the barrel and it had leaded something horrible, like a 2" skeg of lead up the top of the throat. Never seen that pistol do that with any other ammo we've ever put through it - needless to say, that was the last Thunderbolt we bought.

Delightful pistol in every way - I don't care if it don't like Winchester ammo, neither do I - my only real complaint is that gorgeous target grip; I'd really like a left-handed one... ;)

I'm sorting out a warranty issue with SW. The US office claims that any retailer should be able to obtain parts..... There's Murray Charlton out in BC- service center, they may be able to help.

I have owned & shot 41's since 1984 . Still have 3 of them , in both barrel lengths .
They like Rem. Target ammo. I do agree that standard vel. is the best choice .
Why beat them up ? Great guns to keep & shoot . ,,,,,,,,,,,,, Frank .

New barrel

Murray Charlton in Saanich on Vancouver island is the S&W official rep/gunsmith. Ask him. He rebarrelled my S&W model 15 with a 6" from 4" barrel. He has a website.
