S&W Model 41 Discussion

Back in the early 70s when I was a weekly indoor target shooter, the S&W 41 was the queen of the range as far as quality and accuracy was concerned. I do not recall any complaints of ammunition sensitivity, however any brand like Remington covered with that gold gunk as bullet lube was poison in any target auto.

Also popular were the High Standard Supermatic Citation and Victor models which were excellent.
My own pistol was a Browning Medallist, which was superb.
I won a provincial competition with it.

All were very reliable and we shot mostly CIL standard velocity ammo with the typical wax-greased bullets in them.

Appreciate all the helpful posts, guys. Went to the range, and played with my new 41, for the first time. What a joy to shoot! Fed it some CCI SV's. Quite happy with the accuracy, although I need to improve, lol. Zero malfunctions. after 200 rounds. That trigger is something else!

Now I really want a 5.5 inch barrel, only, with red dot, as a companion to my 7 inch barrel, with open sights. I started asking around, and it seems to be difficult to find a 5.5 inch barrel. If anybody can help me, I sure would appreciate it, bigtime.

If you really want a red dot, I would recommend a Clark barrel. There are several variations, check their website. I have the 6 1/2 inch barrel with a Trijicon RMR red dot, the most accurate firearm I have. From 25 meters, benched with two hands, 20 rounds in less than 3/8 inch group. Wish I could do that standing in NRA match ..... But at least I know the firearm is better than I am, lol.

I also have the original 5 1/2 inch S&W barrel, wiling to part with it, but would not recommend modifications (required) for mounting a red dot sight. Believe better value non-modified.

Would like a Clark barrel, but they will not ship out of USA. How old is your 5.5?

Via email, Murray Charlton, the official Canadian S&W Gunsmith said that I could put a deposit on one, but they are sold out at the moment, and would put in for the next order. I'm not sure of the wait time though. will have to contact them.

Found one! Through word of mouth, I was able to locate a used 5.5 inch factory barrel, from a Gun nut/dealer, who sells from home. Just over an hour drive. Pretty happy, since they are really hard to find, anywhere. Also bought a Weaver top mount base, to mount on the 7 inch barrel, I think. I haven't decided, which barrel to put it on. I hope it's the right, and only part needed, to mount a red dot or scope, on the 41. Any tips/instructions for optics mounting, would be much appreciated

Well, the 5.5 inch barrel seems to have a worn locking cam. when the slide is open, the trigger guard almost falls down, under it's own weight, its so loose. The slide rubs the barrel surfaces, since its so poorly fitted. Too loose for comfort. Bummer!

The problem with 41s is that they are now a limited edition build, so extra barrels etc are not easy to obtain.
I have a collection of them. It takes time to find stuff

This is VERY easy to fix. Take it to a machine shop for resurfacing. Take the barrel that fits well so they can measure critical dimensions. They will prob charge you 200. to build up and true the surface of the locking cam and true up the rails to your current working barrel
