S&W Model 686 Pluscylinder sticking

Just wondering if anyone has had a problem with their Model 686 Plus bought after June of 2008? For some reason I now really have to push extremely hard to get the cylinder out....and yes I am pushing on the cylinder lock at the same time! lol

I bought this gun new in the summer of 2008. I have probably only put a couple of hundred rounds through it and have cleaned and oiled it every time I shot it.

I'm wondering who to send it to for repair also?

Happened to me once when I first shot my 586. The ejection rod loosened or back threaded itself from the cylinder and was difficult to nearly impossible to open. All I needed to do was tighten it and it worked perfectly again.

My old 686 developed the same problem. Never happened back when it was in frequent use, but began after it sat in the safe for long periods.

Just checked and it was very difficult to get the cylinder to swing out.

Explanation and solution:

The centre pin located inside the extractor rod is what moves forward when you push on the cylinder release latch (thumb piece). It is spring loaded and pushes against the locking bolt which is also spring loaded.
In my case, I lubricated both ends of the centre pin and also the locking bolt. I used Slip 2000 (from Western Gun Parts) which I have found to be a superior lube and corrosion preventer.
That solved the problem. I believe that my previous lube, Breakfree CLP must have dried up and this led to the centre pin being very hard to move.

+1 My 586 had the same problem. The ejector rod has a left-hand thread, BTW.

If by chance it becomes impossible to open the cylinder because the ejector has loosened too much, get a small screwdriver, like a jeweler's flat head screwdriver and pry out (gently) the spring loaded lug in front of the ejector rod.

To prevent this event repeating, apply Loctite Blue (for guns) very sparingly, on the ejector rod threads.
 
Hey guys, you were right on both counts! I have been using clp, quite a blob of it inside the pin area and yes, it was about 1/2 a turn loose!
