I bought an S&W MP9 and was super excited about its arrival. I took it to the range today and it shot great other then the white piece from the front sight falling out. Anyways I brought it home and field stripped it, cleaned it, oiled it and put it back together. I went to through a mag in and cocked the slide, released it and went to dry fire. For some reason now when I go to pull the trigger the whole slide moves back before the firing pin releases. I looked at my friends to compare and his slide does not move at all when pulling the trigger. You just hear the normal "click" and thats it. My slide moves back about a 1/8" for the full trigger pull before I hear the firing pin release. This is my first hand gun that I have owned personally so I need some help. Can anyone shine some light on something that I may have done wrong? The field strip pulled about smoothly and it went back together smoothly as well. Not sure if I should be contacting the company I purchased from for warranty or if its simple something that I am over looking. Thanks in advance to anyone that can help.

How far apart did you pull it? Specifically did you remove the striker assembly? Sear block? Does your pistol have a magazine safety Oh yes, and where abouts are you? First thing to try, however is to remove the slide and look for the thing that looks like a button, on the same side as the trigger bar, that's the firing pin safety (officially it's called the firing pin block)- get a key, or the tip of a screwdriver and push the button in, you should be able to push the firing pin forward until it sticks through the breach face. Make sure the FPB isn't locking the striker up, the striker should move freely when the button is depressed. Re-assemble and try to dry fire.

Hi enefgee. To start I am in Edmonton, Alberta. When taking it apart to clean all I did was flip the sear lever, then lowered the take down lever and took the slide off. On the slide I took out the spring and barrel. Thats as far as I went to clean the gun. I assembled it the same way. Not sure what you mean by mag safety but if your talking about the safety where I can't fire the gun unless the mag is in then yes it has a magazine safety. I will try what you said and see if it fixes it. Thanks for the suggestions. Will keep you posted

If that doesn't work, drop me a PM there are few other things that might do it, but I'm thinking the FPB has the striker locked in place, so the striker and slide move instead of just the striker.

Take the slide back off, then re-install but make sure you hold the trigger in it's forward position when putting the slide back on. I was told that the issue your having does happen with these guns. So when I was looking to buy, although the M&P looked and actually I thought felt a little better in the hand, I went with the Glock 17.
