I am new to handguns this being my first. Have put 1500-2000 rounds through this pistol and noticed a crack in the rear frame rail. I am curious to know how to replace it and more importanly why did it crack?. Will take to a gunsmith, however, it's a sunday, so, I am looking for info. Have added pics of cracked rail and also another area that causes me some concern, I just don't know what it is considered so I circled it.

might be a problem with the molding process of the plastic, if it's the metal rail could be just a lemon per say, I believe M.D. Charlton Co. is one of the repair centers for Smith & Wesson in Canada, here is there info { take advantage of the lifetime warranty S&W has :) }

What you see on your first picture is not the rear frame rail but your ejector. (when the slide bring the empty casing on its way back, this part does not moves and thus throw the case out.) So your ejector is fractured.

Then on picture #2, it seems to be the area that will lock / unlock your slide. (tilting your barrel up or down) that seems to be cracked. In my opinion, this would be caused by bad metallurgy.

This is not normal at all, these gun usually can handle 10 000 rounds before needing any refurb. I think you got a bad lemon. Turn it back !

Good luck

The ejector damage should not be difficult to repair. Take her to a gunsmith. It may even be covered by warranty.
On the other hand, the damage/wear on the back of the locking block looks like you may have a fit problem. This is still something that you should have a gunsmith look at, but it may not be as simple a fix as the ejector.

The first part you have circled is the ejector, I'd just clean the ragged edge up with a stone, as long as the pistol is correctly launching it's empties (should be about 2-3 feet right and rear of the shooter). How does the pistol eject? The second part you have circled is the rear of the locking block, they are more often than not unfinished like that from the factory, that one looks like every other one I've seen, including the ones on each of my 9's and my 45. That face of the block does not bare any serious impact, just the face of the slide coming forward under spring tension. I believe these parts are the dreaded MIM parts, so that scar is (more than likely) where the metal is injected into the mold. Have it checked out, but I think that's what you'll find. You're probably just not abusing it enough.

I just looked at my M&P 9 (about 400-500 rounds)...my locking block has the roughness also but it is about half as big as yours is but as enefgee pointed out that area doesn't see impact. My ejector though (in reference to your first pic) doesn't show any of the damage of yours...definitely something going on there...

You could stone that ejector up and be ok, but if it is a new gun, take it back and get it replaced. I can't see the crack in the locking cam, but have your gunsmith look at it while having the ejector replaced

I just had a look at my M&P 9 as well. I have close on 2500 rounds through mine. My locking block looks the same as yours, though not quite as bad.

The locking block on my MP9 looks exactly like the OPs as well, and has done so since the day I got it. As mentioned, they all have that bump/imperfection in that spot.

My ejector, however, is fine(*knocks on wood*), and I've gone through 1500+/- rounds with mine.

My ejectors are fine too, could be that some are too brittle in one batch - they're just stamped sheet steel after all. My current 9 is well past 6,000 rounds - you just have to abuse them more guys, it's the secret of reliability with M&P's

Thanks for the replies guys. The crack in the ejector is through to the other side so it will need replacing. The look of the locking cam had me wondering if something is hitting it when slide comes forward. S&W warranty shop is not too far away so I have contacted them and am awaiting a reply. Thanks again.

Definatly give MD Charlton a shout. They know their stuff with Smith and Wesson firearms. I got my Mod 10 there getting some work done.
