I am thinking of purchasing a S & W New Model No.3, Serial # 33,###, original chambering in 44 Russian, and would like to know if it is considered a prescribed antique.

Definetly is, but if you can IMHO would suggest the first Model DA in 44 Russian if you are new to antiques as they shoot in both double and single action and the new Model 3 is single action only. All S&W First Model Double actions in 44 Russian are antiques in all serial numbers as well as All new model three guns in 44 Russian all serial #. I have owned both and now have only the double actions way better gun, there is one on the EE a little more money but worth it. They are newer guns as well made right up to 1898 and the model three stopped in 1880 hope this helps Ron carefull its an addiction I now have 7 of them lol

Thank you for the replies. I understand the New Model No.3 was catalogued and sold until 1912 but all frames were manufactured prior to 1898 and that the serial numbers do not necessarily reflect the date shipped.

Can anybody provide the FRT# ?

Not all S&W DA are antique in 44 russian there is or was a serial number cut off for this model in Canada unless that has changed.
Remember were pre 1898 so guns made in 1898 dont count and some S&W DA model were made in 1898 a few thousand at least. Check with CFC before you buy one above the cut off.
The cut off serial number does seem to change.
I know the info out there is confuseing and alot of people think all S&W DAs are pre 1898 but there not in Canada but in the USA they are.

All the S&W New model number 3s are pre 1898 tho.

Dingus,

Thank you for your reply.

When you state: "All the S&W New model number 3s are pre 1898 tho."

Is this info from the FRT?

If not, where did you find this info?

Thanks.

The S&W N M #3 s im not sure what the FRT says on them i dont have access to the info But all of them are considered antique by date of manufacture that info came from the S&W factory as far as i know.
Its just a known fact in the USA there pre 1898 made.
As long as a NM #3 is in the OK cartridge it will be antique up here.
CFC will or should give you a letter on one if its in 44 russian.

All the S&W NM #3s that are listed with OK cartridges seem to be listed as antique in the old FRT info i have seen if you PM me the barrel length and cartridge it takes i can try and find you the correct FRT #

I called recently on a double action smith with a serial of 39,000. They told me that they cut it off at 29,000 depends which tech you talk to it seems though

I have an FRT letter issued within the last six months for a Top Break No.3 Double action New Model Serial 37###. Hope this helps...Riverpro
