I have a S&W 686 no dash that hasn't given me any issues but I'm considering getting the hammer bushing modification done. I primarily shoot wad cutters using 357 brass but will occaisionally shoot factory loads. First off I'm on the fence about doing it at all but secondly where would I get it done? S&W (from what I've read) will still do it under a safety recall warranty. If I do decide to get it done, is it possible to send it to S&W? I can just imagine all the customs BS to do this if it can be done at all. Has anyone here had any experience getting S&W to do it or somewhere here in Canada?
Comments welcome
Thanks
Jim

If S&W agrees to do it at all, the work would probably be done by one of the incompetent service centres here in Canada. Prepare yourself to be without the firearm for a very long time, and when it finally gets returned, shoddy workmanship.

If you're uncomfortable performing the work yourself, I would seek a reputable, likely non-S&W-authorized, gunsmith to do the work for you.

Thanks for the reply. Not sure I want to do this at all but If I could find a competent gun smith close to home with good reviews and a reasonable cost I may go ahead with it. Otherwise I'm just going to forget it.

I wouldn't worry about the modification unless you start having issues. IIRC, the problem was an incompatibility between the S&W revolver and Winchester Silvertip ammo, the primer would flow around the FP and into the bushing resulting in a failure to rotate. Try your plinking and defense ammo then consider if the mod is required.

I shot the same for years with no problem, usally just reg 38sp, same with my 19-2
You Could talk to Clay at Prophet River and see what he thinks about shipping it, But I would not.

Haven't had any issues, because of the difficulty getting it dealt with I'm not going to bother.

just shoot 38 special ammo and you will have no issues.
I usually don't shoot factory ammo. I used to reload and shoot .38 spl. but changed to .357 brass because of the 1/8" hard to clean buildup in the cylinder. I'm not going to bother with the modification.
Thanks all for the suggestions.

I was gonna get a cheap ultrasonic cleaner to throw my cylinders in to address this build up.

Tried that! Ultrasonic cleaner didn't touch it. I would have to use a brass bore brush on a drill to remove it. Not worth the hassle so I just switched to using .357 brass. Same load NO issues same accuracy.
