Hi all,

I have decided to purchase a .40 pistol and I am currently looking at two choices:

Smith & Wesson M&P .40 and Springfield Armory XD9 .40

Any comments/suggestion on which is better?

Guy B.

I own an XD and love it. There are lots of reviews/opinions on here about them and almost all are positive. I'd recommend an XD to anyone.

One major difference between the two pistols you may want to consider is trigger type. I might be wrong but I believe the M&P is double action while the XD uses a single action.

Yeah I know everyone swears about how good the XD is and I dunno I shot one and I was unable to be very accurate has I was with my Glock I kinda want to blame the small grip on the XD so you have small hands or it feel comfortable in your hands then just get an XD!!!

you're not going to get many responses about the M&P40, as its not really released up here yet and no one has completed an importation of one yet... if you do a search you'll see a few threads about them... but no real person on here /w trigger time yet. There are a few reviews on the US forums such as on sigforum.com.

good luck

Of those two, the XD has the advantage of a having a few years in the marketplace with fairly positive reviews—since the S&W is a new design it does not have that advantage. My view of the last few S&W semiauto designs is that they've been a little hit or miss. The M&P looks promising, but I'd wait a bit. Any reason why other models such as SIG's, Glocks or H&K's didn't make the cut?

wow i was just gonna post up the same question...:p
for me the sig, glock, h & k, didn't meet my price point requirement(for a brand new one that is)...but you guys are right not much on the s&w m&p...in terms of reviews especially in canada...does anybody know when we might be getting the m&p here? seems like the m&p is getting good reviews down south...so far the only thing they dont like is the grip on it.

btw the m&p barrel length is 4.25 inches... will that pass canadian standards...i know the xd comes in 4" and that is prohib. so we can only get the tactical version, hopefullt the m&p will be a pass.

My XD has worked flawlessly (had one ammo related issue). As an owner of a S&W, HK pistols, and having tried MANY Glocks... I can honestly say that to me the XD is the way to go. Way cheaper than my USP. Fits / feels incredibly good in my hand and operates oh so smoothly. I can't see how you could go wrong with an XD in .40SW.

Regards,

I don't like XDs, but obviously many peopel do...

5in model is ugly as hell IMO (4in looks better), the M&P isn't even out so no one knows (yet) if it will be any good...

Springfield...

I'm with Lugger on this one... but since you only have named two choices & the Springer is the only one available at this point that's should be your choice. I like the .40 S&W but I prefer to launch it out of a Glock 22 +/or Browning HP MkIII... ;)

does anybody know when we will might be seeing the s&w m&p .40
in canada?

Thanks for the interest in this post. I talked to my gunsmith this week and apparently only 40 S&W will make it to Quebec this year. He has placed an order for 4 and expecting delivery in the next couple of weeks.

In the mean time I think I'll go with the XD9 Tactical in 9mm. caliber. He sells it for $680 CDN. Not bad.

Thanks again to all of you for your opinions.

in the other thread posted by SixStar, it looks like the M&P is still being refined by S&W, if that is true it would be doubtful that you see your pistol in the next few weeks, hopefully you'll get one of the beefed up M&Ps

I wouldn't be swayed by the initial appearance of the 5" XD models - they draw, point and shoot beautifully. They do look 'longish', but if you compare the profile to other 4" pistols, you'll find they really are only about 3/8" to 1/2" longer on average. As a bonus, their top, front heavy stature soaks up the .40 recoil nicely and drops the front sight back on target fast but doesn't 'unbalance' the pistol (I find mine less snappy than most 9mm pistols I have shot). The controls are easy to use, with an ambi safety to boot. You really have to try it for yourself.
Another interesting little tidbit: the XD series was built around the .40 S&W cartridge, and modified for others, not the other way 'round.:p
