This is a S&W Model 10 in 38 S&W. The serial is 9390XX. On the otherside of the lanyard is a "W" followed by some symbols. From left to right it looks like a sideways "T", then an "O" with flames coming out the top and then a "P". I gather from searching elsewhere the "P" is a proof mark. Is this military? I know I have seen the "flaming O" somewhere else but can't quite place it. There's lots written about the Victory or "V" models, but I can't find any info on this one. I assumed it was just a regular commercial production.

Any info?

Looks like a victory model. What caliber is it? Either .38 Smith and Wesson or .38 Special.

There is lots of info on all the markings over at http://smith-wessonforum.com/forum.php

All your questions will be answered in about 5 minutes with the search function on the S&W forum.

Sounds like a S&W victory model. The O is a flaming bomb mark of US ordnance and the letters are the inspector's initials. Is one of the Xs a V?

I'll have to take a closer look at the S&W forum thanks for the hint. Upon a quick review looks like a "pre-victory" model, maybe lend lease.

the victory models should have a V preceeding the s/n and should apear on a few places ,even the cylinder. It does not look parkerized as they would have been. (Is it?) Not saying there aren't variances during manufacturing in the war years, but it doesn't seem to be a victory model.
