S&W Revolver Question

Today at the range i saw that guy with a S&W revolver. VERY LONG barrel, with ajustable sight(4 range) with a recoil stabalizer or something under the barrel. Been looking over the internet for the gun(that was easy) but it seems that the parts are hard to find. He told he paid the gun around 700$ and about 300 each part, IF i remember good. Anyone could give me some direction about it.

P.S. he was shooting some 357 might me 38. and the gun was chromed(stainless)

It was a PPC revolver, a heavily modified gun designed for accuracy out to 50m, normally firing ultra-light 38 spl. wadcutter loads. A "name brand" PPC revolver will cost around $1500 from an expert builder, but you can normally find used ones for about half of that. I just bought a similar revolver for about $800. Due to the loads used, these revolvers last virtually forever, and only require re-timing every few years if you're competing.

sounds like the same gun, BUT the sight doesnt seems ajustable. It was that gun in stainless chrome.
 
The Dan Wesson looks nice all right but the S&Ws are more readily available and parts are easy to find and buy in Canada. I shoot PPC and probably have about 3/4 of a million rounds through it, I`ve used the same gun for close to 40 years, go S&W.
 
The front sight is known as the "target" or "adjustable" sight. You can preset up to 4 range options to allow for bullet drop. The holes in the top allow setting the blade height individually for the 4 settings and the thumbwheel edges are used to pick the number for the preset you need to shoot. Great for PPC. Not so great for shoot short, shoot long, shoot short type events. Also great for long range plinking as the settings are repeatable.

Not sure if they came on aftermarket PPC barrels or only on S&W's own barrels but I've seen a few for sale here and there including our own EE section. You'll just need to be patient and keep the money ready and check often so you're ready to strike when the next one shows up.

Or if you just can't wait and don't mind the money the S&W Performance Center should be able to sell you one. You'll need to order it through one of the gun stores and wait a while though.
 
Try going to the S&W site and take a look at the Performance Center 627. They have a couple of models with removable compensators and barrel weights that look a bit like your image. I'm lusting for one of those. Maybe they can be made with longer barrels than those you will see on the web page. It's a premium firearm and comes in .357 and .44 as I recall
 
Originally offered by S&W on their silhouette guns, which is what the four front sight positions were for (50, 100, 150, 200 meters). First one out was a 10" S&W 29 if memory serves. Interesting idea and a good sight (which had already been available in aftermarket versions incidentally, both for PPC and silhouette shooters), but the 29 was not the revolver of choice for steel shooters. It didn't stand up to the constant full power load diet very well. Still a good idea though. - dan
