I have a 6” Smith m27-3 that will spin past lockup on one cylinder if the trigger is pulled hard, anyone know what it could be? There are no visible signs of any issues.

Yes, all functions seem normal in single action or normal double action but a harder than normal pull will send it past. I know someone will probably mention that pulling hard is not the way to fire a revolver, I realize that, but it still should lock up.

Check the bolt - that's the cylinder lock in the bottom of the frame, it should have sufficient pressure and move quickly up and down. If it doesn't there are two possibilities, the bolt spring is damaged or there is sufficient gunk built up to slow it's action. The only way the cylinder can spin past the locking notch is if the bolt does not pop up fast enough o catch it.

If I had it in front of me I'd remove the sideplate. Like T&G said, there could be gunk buildup and just need a good cleaning and oiling.
If you decide to do that, remove the three screws, then tap the butt with a plastic/leather hammer and shake the sideplate loose. (Do not pry it off)

Thanks guys, finally had time to have a look. Took the sideplate off (thanks for the tip to get it off Lejarretnoir) didn't seem gummed up at all though but I figured I had it apart anyway. Scrubbed it with some rubbing alcohol first, then some nitro solvent dried it and re-oiled. Back together it went and works perfect.
