I am new to shooting, haven't picked up my first gun yet, still waiting on my PAL (should be here any day). I have purchased a S&W SD9 that's waiting for me at my local gun shop. Any advice for this gun? For cleaning, upgrades or kinds of ammo to use? Any and all advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Get some G96 and Hoppes #9. I put that sh!t on every gun I own!
There are videos on Youtube on how to fieldstrip your S&W.
You might want a trigger upgrade but I would shoot the gun a bit first before getting it. The Apex trigger kit is the go to for this gun.

Try 115 or 124gr ammo to start. The only brands I would stay away from initially are Wartek and Barnaul.
Congrats and enjoy!

It's funny you mention a trigger kit. I've purchased the gun second hand and it is coming with an upgraded trigger with it already. The previous owner hadn't installed in yet, but traded it in to the gun store with it and when I bought the gun it just came with it. The guy told me its worth $80 and makes a big difference. If I recall, it brings it down to a 4 or 5lbs trigger. They said they would install it for free if I wanted, think I should go ahead with that? (I'm hoping to pick it up in the next week or two when my PAL gets here)

Yes, have them install it. Keep the old parts.

Don't get them to install it. Apex has a video on how to do it and it is pretty simple.
If you are like most people you are going to tear the gun down eventually anyway so why not start learning right from the start?
