S&W SD9 Not in Canada?

Hello folks, maybe some industry people can help me understand. Why is the SD9VE available in Canada, but the other versions, like the regular S&W SD is not? Isn't the barrel from the VE the same as the SD9? Could the factory not put in the VE barrel to meet our Restricted laws? The regular SD looks great and comes in a variety of finishes.

I sent them a message a year ago and got a response which was more or less "look at our website to see where the pistol is available". I've sent them another today to try to get clarification.
 
VE means value enhanced. SD is self defense. SD also means crappy trigger and cheapest available. If there is a value enhancement to cheapest available... wouldn't that be a GOOD thing?
