Hey All,
looking for some opinions here. I am planning to purchase an AR, and at the local shop they have a couple STAG's and a couple MP15s'. There is a $400 spread between them. I understand that the S&W is a quality unit, but what sets the STAG apart from it? All things being equal, are they pretty comparable?
Thanks

Hell NO!
STAG is way, way, way better than anything S&W can put together from other companies.
FEER THE DEER!
Talk to Walter he will straighten you out.

I saw some a Stag the other day with the front sight canted to the left, maybe 8-12 degrees. Barrel was aligned properly, it seems whomever did the relief cuts in the barrel did them wrong, thus the FSP was crooked.

Personally, Stag - no question. The reason is that if you have a problem with one (very, very rare) you call Walter who is both a decent guy and an expert with regard to the AR and you get it fixed. While Smith has a good warranty system for their pistols (I own 3 S&W pistols), I'm less sure of their warranty system for rifles. I'm also pretty darned sure I don't see Smith's name in a box at the top of the page - that means something too.

S&W's are getting a really good reputation as a quality gun here. I have seen them in classes, but never fired one. I watched a brand new stag lefty owned by a cop go down in a class-rolled a pin out the side (trigger or hammer, dont remember). I was running a samson railed stag upper on a CMMG lower in the same class. It has been a problem free gun since I got it. As well I own a second stag, and am truly impressed, so I dont think either the S&W or the Stag would be a bad choice.
The best gun for the money at the moment here seems to be the stuff BCM is putting out. Were I to get another AR, that would be the way I would go. A good friend of mine has a BCM upper coming in this week. Im looking forward to playing with it.
My current toy of choice is a Colt 6920. This thing runs, but they know what they want for em!

Sure you did

That's the way Stag makes them. That's why they are so popular....

:slap:

now be quiet while the grownups talk.

Your opinion is kinda moot here in Canada as there are limited choices and the amount of after market support is drastically different. Guns do not go back to the factory here after a phone call with a free UPS tag.

Sure, I want a BCM, but I am not even sure BCM is registered with US DOS for export. And colt, that's almost doubled the price of S&W and Stag.

I have seen that happen a few times with Colt rifles. It was not a problem with any part of the rifle but an assembly error. Took a minute to fix and nothing since.

I am not a weapons tech but I have stayed at a Holiday Inn.

yeah I know. Thats why it didnt leave a bad impression. It was funny that it happened to a cops gun in a class. The guy should have worked out the bugs at that point. Like I said, my stags have been great.

Im still learning. And I wish guns went back to the factory with free UPS tags. Still, it is easier to send them back here. And easier to get what you want. Colts here arent double what a stag would go for, more like 1.5 times the stag price tag. I picked mine up because I wanted a colt knowing full well I could get the same quality for less money. It was M4 #6. No point in buying a 6th one if its not what you want............

I haven't had a chance to check out the S&W. I do however have a Stag 2T. I love it. Great quality, for a reasonable price. Walt at Arms East was excellent to deal with.

Also from some reports I've read, the Stag rifles that Walt sells have been known to be slightly upgraded from the American Stag rifles. For instance some of the things listed as missing in the AR milspec list are in fact present on the Canadian Stag rifles. H buffer for example comes to mind.

I've got 3 Stag's and a buddy just bought one with one of the new 12.5" N8 uppers, great guns.

Are the S&W's still neutered?

BCM isn't registered, I tried to order a big bad seal clubbing charging handle.

Thanks Guys, I've been chewing on this one. I also discovered that my local shop where I'll be purchasing also has the Chiappa .22lr uppers in stock - and wouldn't you know it, the cost of the Chiappa upper is almost exactly the same as the difference between the Stag and the S&W. I think I know which way I'm going.
I've read good things about the Chiappa uppers, anyone have any experience with them?
