S&W XVR 460 vs 500 ?

.460 if you don't reload, .500 if you do.

To my mind either gun is ONLY justifiable if you reload. Factory ammo for this size is just way over the top cost wise. Not to mention the versatility in recoil and muzzle flash you can go for when reloading to suit your own tastes.

If I was to buy a "cartoon revolver" of either size I think I'd opt for the .460 since it has the versatility of shooting the .45LC rounds for plinking. And even in the big .460 a proper .45LC load will give a good kick compared to the wussy cowboy loads that .45LC typically comes in these days. Plus with the .460 the .454 Casull rounds are an option. Three way versatility vs single option. Nope, that's not a hard one at all.....

If you buy either gun you either have no brains or a wallet big enough to feed it. My opinion is unchanged.

I own an XVR and a .500. Who are you calling a Wal-Mart shopper?? To be honest I am cheap as a *** but they are too fun not to play with.

B, you gotta agree though that one of the big grins with these is the ability to customize the loads for power, show and feel over a wider range than is possible with most other calibers. And since precious few ever get an ATC power, show, feel and the ability to clear a range table off with the muzzle blast is all we have left :D And from having shot some factory .500 Hornady compared to reloading them I can't help think that a big bore shooter isn't getting their money's worth out of the gun if they are only shooting factory options. I may have gone on about the cost of the ammo but really it's about the experience with these things.

So, as of right now, the verdict is siding with the 460....?

I would side with the 460 only because the reloading projectiles are much easier to come by.

I have a Desert Eagle in 50 AE and I can get projectiles for it but the 45 caliber ones are a lot easier/cheaper to come by than the 50 caliber ones.

S&w 460

I got to go with the 460, I like the idea of the 500 and if you reload the 500 you can make your loads from mild to wild but I have a 460 and I reload the 45's and 454's as well as the 460, it's great if you have someone who wants to shoot a BIG gun but can't handle the hot loads ( my 10 and 11 yr old grandsons) and when you fire up the big rounds you get some nice special effects ( smoke, flame and a woody all in one) :agree:

I can agree that with anything in the .454 range and up, factory ammo is s**t! The only people making full house loads are the smaller companies with only a few exceptions. Handloading is always better.

Yup the .460 is more versatile but there's nothing that compares to the .500 Your best bet is to work extra hard and buy both eventually :D

;)I agree with johnl, :)but I like this one.

And I like the accuracy results I've got with it.

I'd still like to one day get a 460 and while it is somewhat more versitile in that it can handle 45LC, for the most part if I want to shoot a 45LC I'll use the gun made for that cartridge.
