S&W XVR 460 vs 500 ?

I shoot a fair amount of .454 out of my 460V as I find the lead tipped .45LC would cake the barrel and was a lot of work to clean. However on those cold days the wicked blast of .460 can actually warm you up! I don't get that kind of blast from my 500 probably due to the difference in barrel length. The recoil on the 500 is much more intense though.

That's sort of my one ##### about my 8 3/8" 500. Not so much the muzzle blast but more the s**t blown back towards your face by the angle of the muzzle break. I don't really think it's a necessity so I wouldn't mind a slightly shorter barrel without the muzzle break.

The shorter barrels produce more fire and brimstone for a bigger show. It's not like we can hunt with these things up here in Canada so going for the Big Show is all that's left.

Hint; try H110 in your reloads. It's a slower burn so it pushes more than punches. So you can load easily to near max loads and it produces the most satisfying muzzle fireballs and cylinder gap flame sheets.... :D
 
i have shot both, i own 2 of the 500's and love the caliber.....just recieved some 700gr. lead flat points cant wait to try them out..
i am also finishing up a build on a 500 AR upper to mate up with the handguns....mega cool...
 
6.5" X Frame .500

I see that S&W have the 500 available in a 6.5" barrel length also, anybody fired one? How much "worse" is the felt recoil over the 8 3/8ths version? For some reason which escapes me right now, they even make a 4"!!! I'd like to shake the hand of anyone who would buy one of those on purpose and shoot full house loads.

The reason I ask about the 6.5" is because a shop near home has one and the guns lines are very nice. It's kind of a toss up between the 8 3/8ths and the 6.5.

Please keep in mind the .460 and .500 are very big guns! If you haven't tried one you should before purchasing. I feel bad shooting mine indoors. You can be on the other end of the firing line and have your groups ruined!
 
The biggest I've fired is a Dan Wesson .445 Supermag, and that was outdoors! B, how much does the factory ammo cost for .500, and maybe the dies? Is there a big difference between the .460 and the .500? Will need to build up a supply of cases. Lord knows it's more fun making the empties yourself.
 
500 is a great fun gun with some hot loads! the only diff here in gp cant shoot the 500 inside where you can shoot 45 loads from the 460.
 
factory loads for the 500 are $79.95 for 20 rounds of Hornady 300gr. JHP...
reloading is much more cost effective and you can load up to a monster 710 grain. bullet....yeeeehaaaa!
