How can you tell the difference between the two. I purchased one with a synthetic stock and that is easy to see the difference but I have one with a wood stock and would like to know if it is an S1 or S2. All markings are the same except the safety switch is different.

Check the trigger. The S1 will have a ####ty gritty pull and the S2 will have a better 2 stage pull.

How many positions is the safety? Assuming factory trigger assembly's. the new S2 have a 3 position saftey and the old ones have a 2 position. Hang a picture or call weatherby and confirm ser#s
Safety is the best way to tell.
As some here have posted, the S1 has only 2 positions, safe & fire.
S2 rifles have 3 positions, safe that also locks the bolt, safe that allows you to cycle the bolt, & fire.

Yes they are I have one in 7-08 and it was well worth the money. I've just picked up a .223 vanguard and have discovered it is an S1. Just debating as to whether or not to keep it. if it shoots as good as the S2 I'll be happy.
I have 5 Vanguards. Two are the S2 model, 3 are S1's.
These are very good rifles for the coin spent.
The S2 rifle have a much better trigger. Otherwise, there is no
real difference besides the safety positions mentioned earlier.
All my Vanguard rifles will shoot MOA or better with loads they like.

S2 Vanguard has a 3 position safety, a SMOOTH 2 stage trigger and "Griptonite" inserts in the stock. They are the black areas on the stock. Also, the S2 are guaranteed to shoot sub MOA. This is my rifle in 300 WBY with a Vortex Viper 6.5-20x50 mildot scope.

I've got (2) S1 Vanguards and (1) new style Howa with the 2-stage trigger and 3-position safety. The Howa has the better trigger by far, though I don't have much issue with the S1's as others have reported.
I'll definitely buy more Howa/Weatherby rifles.
