SA 22 scope

I have a browning SA22 and while the iron sights are good I was wondering how much more accurate I would be with a scope. My distance eyesight is not great and I hate the idea of mounting a scope to such a slim rifle. Can anyone recommend a scope that would have a minimal footprint but also increase functionality. Ideally the cost would be far less than the gun itself. Shots would be up to 100 yards at the range but in the field 30 yards or less.

I am Age 71 , so I can empathize about distance vision going to hell - I am to the point that if it does not have a scope, I can not use it. My SA-22 has got a 4X "Baby Browning" scope - I think that was made by Redfield, back whenever. The mounts are made by Talley, but the base unit is stamped with "Browning" name - the rings and base came in a "Talley" box. To mount it to the rifle, I had to remove the rear sight from the barrel - the two threaded holes on the barrel allow the cantilevered base to attach to the barrel, but the base sits over the receiver. The very rear of that base has like a "set screw" that keeps the rear end from flopping up/down. The screw tip sits on the rifle receiver, but does not engage into it by a threaded hole. It allows continued use of the SA-22 take-down feature, so I am told - I have never taken that rifle down.
 
A late thought for OP - for a number of years, a rear aperture sight worked for me, after I could no longer make out the rear sight on the barrel. The front sight seems to still be clear enough to aim - but nothing I have tried for rear sight, now, I have only shot deer and elk with a scoped rifle though - since I was in my teens. Iron sights and aperture sights were used on gophers, and on targets, but I never went "big game" hunting without a scope on the rifle.
 
Hmm - I lied - so like 1977 or so, I had a new-to-me Win 94 in 30-30 Win that I took deer hunting. Iron factory sights. I emptied that rifle twice at running deer, that day - for all I know they are still running - never found anything to indicate a hit. So my "solution" was a Weaver off-set scope mount and a Weaver 4X scope rotated 90 degrees to clearance the "straight-up" ejection. The thing was moved along about the time that I got the Win Model 70 XTR in 308 Win. Our son has that Model 70 now.
 
All of the above... However, I don't have the original SA-22 but a JW-20 clone. I don't use it as a bench rifle but for off hand plinking and small game hunting. I carry it take down in a pack during transport.

I put a scope on it once only to discover that it lost it's nimble receiver carry "feature".

I took the scope off for amentioned reason and put a small red dot on it. Won't put a scope back on that rifle. To me it's not meant to have one!

With the red dot, there's enough room left for wrapping your hand around the receiver for carry and the take down length isn't affected as much as with a scope.

In addition, I don't use the original Browning cantilever base but the Weaver 60A. It's shorter than the OEM Browning. Hence it also helps to keep take down length short.
 
Here's the setup. A smaller reflex sight would make the sight foot print even nicer...

Not sure how accurate the SA is or how accurate you want to try be with it
just that at 50 mtrs I use 18 - 20 X and at 100 mtrs 25X , those are large 56mm objectives.

I've got a pair of Truglo buckline 4x scopes. Cheap, small, light - I only paid like $12 each on clearance from Bullseye. I put one on my Winchester Wildcat and I'm very happy with it despite it being such a cheap scope.
 
Yep - I have Leupold "Freedom" rimfire 4X on a BRNO No. 2 and on CZ 452 Scout - I had read that older Leupold M8-4X were used on rimfire, but I think "parallax" might be an issue with those. If one does not know or care about "parallax", maybe it makes it a non-issue.
 
They look a little weird with a scope on them, but if the barrel nut is adjusted for a good solid lockup, they are quite accurate.
They suck shooting off a bench, hot brass always finds a way onto any open skin lol.
Skinner makes a rear peep, Marbles Bullseye might work well too. I may try one for fun.

Thanks for the suggestions! Maybe a rear peep might be the way to go if I can't track down a nice 3/4 scope with the cantilever mount. The red dot or reflex option might be good also.
