Went out today to test function a newly acquired 5/20 mag. Here is my 100 Meter 15 rd group using South African 147 gr. FMJ surplus. The rifle is sighted dead on with 150 gr Fed. Pwr Shk at 100m and I did not adjust the sights for the SA. I was shooting semi prone so with some kind of rest, it may have better results. All I was expecting was to hit paper but it was better than I thought.

I was out with my shooting buddy and shot 60 rounds of SA PMP surplus ammo this past week. Used 2 rifles,

(1) My 18.5 inch carbine, AKM -clone sage stock, scoped
(2) Buddies,22 inch, tuned (Hungry style) with iron sights, still in Norinco stock

Carbine shot well under 2 inches at 100 yards, and my two groups at 200 yards were under 4 inches. I was able to hit a 12 inch steel, and 8 inch steel 100% out of 10 shots at 200 yards, the 4 inch steel had a 50% hit rate. At 300 yards I had a 100% hit rate on an 18 inch steel plate.

At 100 yards my match handloads (lapua 167gn, norma brass) shot groups around 1 inch ~ 50% better than the MilSurp.

22 inch rifle shot 3-4 inch groups at 100 yards, we did not try to change the norinco sight after I got it zeroed at 100 yards

All of this was done with bags, off a concrete rest.

So when I got home I decided to see how consistent the ammo was, I opened 5 boxes and selected 5 rounds from each, I measured the runout (RO) and COL (measured to the ogive with a comparator), the results are below. I do not have much experience with MilSurp ammo, but this stuff seems consistent, both on the range and on the measuring bench. It is a far cry from my match handloads, but I am still very happy with it.
Shooting conditions were less than ideal!

The 5/20 worked flawlessly with no hiccups, no jams, no misfeeds. SA ammo went bang everytime 60 for 60. No misfires, missing primers, or mishaps. My shorty eats up all kinds of ammo and POA at this setting changes slightly like this but all have gone 1200. This is the first 0700 I've seen. At 25m it was bang on orange.

Looks to be about a 7 to 9 inch group. I get the same results with several M1A's and norcs including accurized bedded ones. Sometimes I get 2 in the same hole then a non shooter induced flyer 10 inches away. I miked over 3000rds. of the crap and found it the worst measuring milsurp .762 I have ever encountered. My Portuguese FNM .762 {and others} measures well and consistently shoots under 1 inch at a hundred.
I suspect that the S/A is belt ammo. Dispersion is desirable in a heavy machine gun - not in an M-14.
Remington UMC at around 12 - 13 bucks per 20 is a better deal iffn yer headspace is o k.

I did the same as you but I did several thousand rds.(In front of the idiot box and lottsa beer - not all at once of course - LOL)The results were much worse and more valid than yours.
Try the same with good milsurp - you will find the peaks very sharp and narrow for over all length - not wide as in your graphs - The variance is differing bullet seating depths - probably due to sloppy manufacture as the ammo is probably destined for belts.
I did however encounter some S/A years ago that measured better - but thats all gone.

S/A milsurp

Burned up about a 1000 rds. It is two and a half at a hundred average out of several rifles and prints a lot low and right compared to all the other brands. UMC .308 is tighter , was able to get consistent one inch groups out of it . If you can still find it at 12.99 it is comparably priced. How bout it Bass Pro ?
Anyone know a source for high quantity U.M.C. .308 ?:sniper:
