SAA question

i have a question as the sticky on the flow chart is down.

would a colt saa that is stamped 44 cf now chambered for 38 sp. be eligible for antique status? year of manufacture 1888

Technically .44CF could be: .44 Colt, .44 Russian, .44 German Service, .440 Webley or .44 American in addition to
.44 WCF.

.44 WCF was the first caliber barrel marking on the SAA, marked as (Colt Frontier Six Shooter) by late 1879.

Was it registered as .38 special or??

right cf is center fire.
im going to go ahead and get that colt letter..
the 38 special was added sometime in the 50's. imported as antique handgun

Colt letter will only say .44 C/(cartridge)

44cf isn't 44-40 but could be . yikes


A handgun manufactured before 1898 that is capable of discharging centre-fire cartridges, other than a handgun designed or adapted to discharge 32 Short Colt, 32 Long Colt, 32 Smith and Wesson, 32 Smith and Wesson Long, 32-20 Winchester, 38 Smith and Wesson, 38 Short Colt, 38 Long Colt, 38-40 Winchester, 44-40 Winchester, or 45 Colt cartridges.

If not you're good to go.

great.. whats the point of getting a colt letter then?

Colt letter (could) prove some particular SAA was or wasn't shipped to notable locations or individuals during the period they were new... like say if it were to come back with a "shipped to" person such as Virgil Earp, Wyatt or Morgan, or Ans Hatfield or something.. Bat masterson... you get the idea

In a case it came back with a famous name it had been shipped to, your Colt could go from a few thousand dollars worth to multiples of that in value. That's the point of a Colt letter above all-else.
