Sabot slug ??

Have a new slug gun this year for deer and bought Winchester partition gold, Hornady SST, Hornady superformance and federal trophy copper sabots. Once I get on paper with the cheap federal blue box ones then I'll see which of the others groups the best. Gave up on Remington accutips, they grouped well but poor performance on deer. My favorite were federals with barnes bullets but no longer available. They hammered the snot out of the deer. Remington has a new product out, premier expander also with barnes bullet. I am eager to try these but are not available here yet, was told likely next year.
How do you figure accutps perform poorly?I have a couple perfectly mushroomed intact slugs that I recovered from nice bucks that we’re quartered hard away. Broadside have been pass throughs and dead deer. They group well for me too.

That is my experience as well .... rifled shotgun barrels are very ammo sensitive. A particular Sabot might work well out of one gun .... and you might not even hit paper with it out of another gun.

I'm happy they work for you.
In both my slug barrels full bore slugs have been much more accurate. Brenneke gold 600r 3" were tops and such a great slug. Rio star and challanger slugs tie for 2nd
I tried every common brand of sabot slug thru both my guns with rifled barrels and although im sure all would work well for deer some grouped ok some grouped horrible some some touched paper but keyholed thru the wooden target frame
Youre going to have to spend the time and money and soak up recoil to find out what your gun likes. They can be like women. Some do everything well. Some do ok with cheap stuff some need an expensive diet while others you just want to give up on

Every barrel is different. I had an open sight barrel om a 870 that shot all 3 different slugs I tried in it well. I sold it and got a cantiveler scope mount barrel and tried Winchester partition, platinum tip( my favorite in the old barrel) hornady sst, the barnes loaded by federal and nothing grouped to my standards.
I read somewhere that due to chamber tolerances some 3 inch barrels prefer 3 inch slugs. The accutip was brand new than and I got a box of 3 inch. It put all 5 into less than a 3 inch group at 100. At 50 they all touch. I have since tried the newer 3 inch federal trophy copper. They weren't very good accuracy wise. I have never tried 2.75 accutips.
So I just keep shooting the 3 inch accutips. They have worked well on deer. I recovered one on a hard quartering shot. it had 99 percent weight retention and a beautiful mushroom just like pics above.

The tolerances in the manufacture of rifled shotgun barrels are just not good enough .... you can have one Browning BPS rifled barrel ... and it will shoot a particular sabot nicely ... and then you take another Browning BPS rifled barrel and with the same sabot you will not even hit paper .... unfortunately ... :-(
Most of us have to test 3 -6 different sabot types and in order to figure out what sabot our barrel likes.
And once you have figured that out ... and if you have a real winning combination that can produce sub 2 inch groups ... you better buy a lifetime supply of that ammo ... because manufacturers can stop producing that particular sabot at any time.
Same here. I have a 20 gauge and use the accutips. I have shot 2 deer with the gun and neither has gone more than 20 yards after the shot. That being said you should try a bunch of different brands to see what is most accurate out of your particular gun.

Have tried federal and two different Winchester sabots in my 870 slug barrel, not so great. Have picked up some Hornady and Remington acutips to try as next, fingers crossed.

Somerimes all shots in group are touching.. which makes me dance wooot

Yeah challengers are great, I’ll be trying them as well. I noticed on the box they say they’re good for use in smooth and rifled barrels and through any choke, if they shoot as good as through any of my smooth bore barrels they’ll be a winner and way cheaper than a sabot.
