Just wondering if anyone here has any ballistic data regarding sbot slugs through a back bored 12 gauge barrel. ? Help me out guys is it a waste of money? I'm trying to justify buying a 700$ slug barrel VS probably under 200$ for a rifled tube and a saddle mount.

i know that it isnt recomended to shoot rifled slugs through a backbored smoothbore because you will get bad accuracy. im guessing it would be the same with a sabot slug?

what kinda gun you want a rifled barrel for? surely there has to be some around for less than $700:eek:

I think it depends on the degree of backboring. I do not foresee any problems with a mild backbore out to say 0.745 inches. Once you are near 10 gauge territory (0.775") then all bets are off. Note that some manufacturers (eg. Remington) recommend that their sabot slugs be fired only from fully rifled barrels, so you may have to do some experimenting with different brands of slugs to find a happy combination with a rifled tube.

thanks Sharptail. Any idea what the backbore diameter is for a browning gold 3.5" ? Or is this something that has to be measured on individual barrel to barrel basis?

Browning shotguns equipped with "Invector Plus" choke tubes have a bore diameter of 0.742 inches, or at least that is what they claim. The company does market a rifled tube for sabots in the "Invector Plus" line, which is a good sign.
