sabot vs rifled slug stopping power

The stopping power of Benneke style slugs on large predators is legendary, and are far better that the Foster thimbles which tend to pancake and produce insufficient penetration IMHO. Sabot slugs are designed for better accuracy at longer range on deer sized game, and are inappropriate for dangerous big game. As soon as you introduce a rifled barrel to a shotgun, it becomes less useful, except for specifically shooting the new hi-tech slugs. Shot patterns are poor, even if grouse and ptarmigan are close, and shooting cracker shells ensures they will detonate inside the bore . . . that'll make your ears ring!

Boomer's words ring true to me. In my singular Brenneke Classic slug experience, I plopped a wild boar at around 75 yards with a good slug shooting shotgun.
I never even had the satisfaction of a death squeal!

The slug whistled right through and buried itself into the deep snowbank, never to be found again.
I liken it to a freight train passing through a train station and not stopping once or even seemingly slowing down.

this is a good thread for me to find out more info

rifled slugs go in what firearm?
i have a 3 1/2 inch chambered semi auto shotgun

i am looking for some slugs,so what would i need?
what choke would i use?
what sort of range are they good for?
how many shells can i have in the tube? (i am in sask if that makes any difference)

rifled slugs are shot from a smooth bore barrel. sabot (pronounced say-bow) slugs go in a rifled barrel and have longer range. (also don't bother shooting buck out of a rifled barrel unless you want your shot pattern to open right the hell up) there are some good vids on youtube about all this. shooting sabot out of a smooth barrel is just a waste of money imo.

use an open or cyl bore choke (you can use others, but it's recommended to use open)

the other questions you should ask another sask hunter (Here in Ont i believe the limit is 3 shots max)

Cheers all for the info

How many shells can you stuff in your shotgun?
Whats the legal limit?

depends on what you are doing. hunting i think the limit is 3 (in Ont at least) target shooting? no limit. if your mag could hold 50 slugs that would still be legal. :D
bear defense... i'm not sure. is that considered hunting? i doubt it. probably lo limit also. but don't quote me. free advice is worth exactly what you paid for it.

My daughter shot a white tail buck last evening with s challenge r slug at 45 YARDS. the slug went in one shoulder and out the other side. Broke both shoulders and kept going. I would have no problem using them on grizzly. If I had to protect my family. That us a huge chunk of lead that hits very hard. Dutch

This whole thread is a dead vs deader discussion, if I had a predatory bear coming in I would use anything at hand... even a rock or a .22 short (aim for the muzzle). If you had a sabot or a rifled slug you should have the upper hand.

The best advice is to have a smooth bore barrel and then you can try a banger first, or shoot a bird too.

I have an SBE2 with a rifled barrel with a leupold slug scope. I tested a bunch of slugs for accuracy and found the Remington Premier Copper solid sabots gave me the best accuracy and I could keep my shots within 6 inches at 200 yards, provided I clean the barrel every 3 shots. Last year I shot a 10 point buck at 200 yards with a double lung shot and he dropped within 20 feet of impact. Upon inspection the slug had created a great wound channel
