A recent edition of the Shotgun News had an ad from a US supplier offering plastic sabots to shoot say .223 bullets from a .308 rifle at 4000fps.

More out of curiosity than anything else I wonder if anyone here has tried "saboted" rounds and what your experience was. My unscientific suspicion is that accuracy would suffer but I have no real world data to back this up.

I have tried the Remington one's called the "Accelerator"
in 30-30 and 30-06 both rounds you were lucky to get all your shots to hit a 14X14 inch paper target at 100 yards.

Both used a sabot with a 55gr spitzer bullet.

ditto yet again... I tried the Accelerators in my 30-06 and the accuracy was terrible. I think they rated them @ 4000 fps with a 55 gr bullet.

I have to echo the sentiments of 'Scott N' I remember when remington unleashed the 'messiah' in the form of the 55 gr sabot / 30-06 in the late 80's ( + - ) they were dismal to say the least, made my mini 14 look match grade 5-7 " groups @ 100 meters

i recall reading an article in "canadian shooting" or some such magazine about using sabots in a ruger #1 458 winchester. the article was entitled something like "4000 fps in a 458 winchester".

The Accelerators were interesting looking if nothing else:

They did provide me with one of the most spectacular gopher kills I've witnessed though.

While most rifles were notoriously inaccurate with the Accelerators, the odd rifle did shoot well with them. I recall a buddy of mine shooting them out of his old P-H 30-06, and they were grouping better than most of his hunting loads, right around 1¼" at 100 yards. Not spectacular, but not bad. Waste of money though, IMHO, since I much prefer a 220 Swift for shooting 55 grain .224 projectiles accurately. Regards, Eagleye.

IIRC they had the 'sabot' on CSI Miami , ( one of 5 episodes I have watched ) this guy was shooting a 308 from hundreds of meters using sabots.......Okie Dokie:slap:
