as for a 60" moose? I put stuff that tough on the soles of my shoes, not on my plate.

if it's 250 you can get closer.

IF I saw a 60" moose and I had a moose tag, i'd be warnign up the meat ginder.:D

And if it was 250 yards away, I would simply place my crosshairs on him and liesurely pull the trigger...;)

I've got a few levers that I won't put scopes on, but I also have a BLR and a number of Savage 99's that are outfitted with glass. "Serious" hunting always means a day out of the lock box for a scoped gun...be it lever or bolt.

You obviously haven't shot any 60" moose. We have taken many that are that size and bigger, and they are not only delicious, but as tender as the smaller ones.

One of the best I ever ate was a 64" monster, that it took two of us to carry each hind and the same for the shoulders. Not quarters, just the hinds and the shoulders taken off the carcass. We still had two more two-man loads to take the rest to the boat.

Come to think of it, the poorest moose we ever had was a young cow.

My levers, including my 375 Marlin all wear Williams FP peeps. A scope on these rifles would make it a god awful thing to carry while dogging. And this is what these guns were built for- heavy brush stomping with your hand wrapped around the receiver for dear life. I am blessed with good eyesight and I can still use the old irons. I hope the day never comes when I have to scope my lever guns. Take the screw out aperture and throw it away and use the hole in the sight frame, with a Williams fire sight front bead you can hunt as late as the law will allow.I have the following peep sighted: Marlin 375 Marlin .35REM Marlin 94 .44 mag Win 94 .30-30 Win 94 .32 sp Win 94 .38-55 Win mod 1886 SRC .45-70 Savage 99 EG .300 Sav Savage 99H carbine .303 Savage, geez I just realized I have alot of money tied up in Williams sights. The money tied up in the lever guns is an investment. (that's what I tell my wife) All the best in 2006 men, Cheers Darryl

Levers with scopes allow you to read the fine print on the back of the soup can.:p

i love my levers, marlins and blrs. love the look of reciever sights but can't see well enough to hit anything beyond 75 yds. all my levers are scoped. all with compact low power. i think they look great and give me the capability to actuly hit something. looks or not if you can't see you shouldn't be using them for hunting.

Have eaten from two mose 55"+ and they didn't convince me. I passed up a big bull this year and shot the spiker it was pushing. to each their own. you shoot the big boy, I'm quite content with his little brother.

it seems strange to me that people would jump all over me for animal size but completly ignor the very serious safety issue I commented on first.

You suggestion that lead would be flying in that direction completely negated any serious safety concerns in your statement.

Amphibious, where most of us hunt moose there is not a hunter around every corner to worry about. If there where you would not be seeing a "60 incher" to begin with.;)

Best moose i ate was a 50" that I got out of a 4 year old forest fire area. I still have some of him in the deep freeze right now. The same year my dad got a 35" two riges over in heavy timber. It tasted like crap. Go figure.

gun gets pointed at you it's in your best interest to shoot first. wasn;t a suggestion.

What about a scout scoped Marlin? Something like a IER Leupold 2.5 fixed power scope in Leupold quick detach rings would allow you to quickly take off the scope if need be or keep it on for those shooting opportunities that a scope is desireable.;) :D You'd still have the ghost ring sights available to you.

.............i have thought of going the "scout scope way" but have read some instances where alot of pistol scopes don't last with the heavy recoiling .45-70. I have no factual evidence just some folks stating this on other forums.
