I am looking to try some of the 178 gr A max bullets in my M14 with the krieger barrel and have been trying to source one of the Sadlak NM grooved gas pistons that are designed for heavier bullets. Anyone have experience with them or know where to get one? Thanks in advance

Brownells has the silver colored ones , but the Titanium Nitride gold finish ones are on back order

I have been testing one of my shorties that has a chinese barrel, usgi gas system and the nm groove piston. She cycled real hard with 180 gr federal hunting ammo. Kicked like a mule lol. So am taking a hint from my friends in the states and I ordered an m1a SOCOM gas plug as it has a larger gas volume. I'll keep ya all posted when I get the tests done. The plug is still weeks away.

The grooved NM piston from sadlak, when tested with usgi or M1A spec rifles, with standard length barrels, allowed the use of ammo heavier than the design's limits of 174 gr.
There is technical data from sadlak on the web if you search for it. NO tests have been done with chinese spec rifles and the piston itself is not designed for use in the slightly larger diameter chinese cylinders.

I got mine from Fabsports. I use it in my M1A for hunting with 180gr bullets and it's perfect.
I've been looking for a second grooved piston for months but didn't get any chance. Let me know if you find one.

The Socom plug is an interesting idea...

I have one thats installed on my rifle and it would not cycle the 168gr that I normally use. With my 175gr bolt gun ammo it cycled fine and with no more noticeable recoil than with the 168's

The NM grooved piston is only for use with the heavier bullets and let's too much gas past the piston to cycle the standard loads below 174 gr.
Ideally one would have both grooved and standard pistons in the kit bag for use with the appropriate or most availlable ammo.

I would like to have a go with the 178 gr A max bullets. Both my AR 10 and my Rem 700 were shooting less than stellar with 155's or 168's. I tried the 178's and they both started cutting cloverleafs. Best of all (joy of joy) they both like the same load. My m14 has the full treatment with both krieger barrel and 7.62mm gas cylinder and piston with a JAE stock. It's shooting pretty good, but I haven't shot it a lot yet. I have been reading that they have been getting good results with the 178's. I may modify an existing piston if I can't get a Sadlak, (being in a fully equipped machine shop with both cutter grinding and edm capabilities has it's advantages). It will all depend if they are case hardened or hardened all the way thru. With 4 differant .308's (and at the moment 4 differant loads) it would be nice to at least use the same bullet if not powder charge.

Interesting discovery today.
I vacuum tested a sadlak Ti coated piston , non grooved, in 6 different 2009 and newer gas cylinders and it passed the test on all 6. Then tested on a couple older cylinders and failed on those. So I tried my collection of USGI pistons, all are used takeoffs from prohib M14 rifles, and all 7 passed the vacuum test on the newer chinese cylinders, on the bench anyways.
This is by no means a claim that sadlak pistons will function optimally in the newer chinese cylinders. Some comprehensive range testing would need to be performed first :D

TREELINEM14.com Check them out. I'm going to start a project soon so I have been looking around tirelessly sourcing out suppliers. They seem to have good prices on USGI stocks as well. Apparently they have a $500.00 order limit as opposed to the typical $100.00 you commonly see, though they cannot export barrels, bolts and complete trigger assys. Seem to be good guys to deal with, quick to respond to inquiries.
If anyone has any other secrets they would like to pass my way, either in tips or suppliers, a PM would be greatly appreciated...as I said, starting a project soon and really just going in blind...like how to learn how to swim...jump in and figure it out!!

Damnit, of course the nice shiny sadlak piston I have in my 2007 doesn't work. At least sourcing a new Chinese cylinder would be cheaper than going usgi I suppose. Hopefully it works in pretty much all the 09's

I think springfield stripped cylinders are only 90 at brownells, the swap your gas band plate, spindle valve assy and that shiny sadlak piston ;) and yer good to go. Oh... And a gas plug I guess too.

Don't remember how much off hand, but I got the whole works including a tin coated piston and they shipped it the same day I ordered it.
