SADLAK or ARMS 18

Yes I too believe TROY's Gen2 stock is a waste of money... A cheap ass civvie version of what was an excellent stock system.
I want to thank everyone for their wisdom. I think I will go with the ARMS 18 mount with the VLTOR stock how does that combo sound?? Next is optics........Hmmmmm.

The VLTOR is just a standard G I fiberglass stock with a pistol grip slider attached.

When epoxy bedded and gas system unitized it can be very accurate.

I have a fibreglass G I with very little front ferrule lip pressure that shoots consistantly under 1 inch at a hundred with cheap factory ammo it likes.

The barrel however is stiffened greatly by an Ultimak aluminum front handguard.

As for the VLTOR it is hard to get and there are similar much cheaper similar options that M14 doctor builds. Pictures of it are in the battle rifle forum.

For the guys that are running a sadlak, is there any difference in funtion between the steel, titanium and airborn mount? Or are they all the same design and height more or less? What height / make of rings are people using? M14doc is building me my dream rifle right now and just thinking ahead...

There might be a slight change in the tolerances between the mount and receiver during outside temperature fluctuations when mating two dissimilar metals such as aluminum to steel, this may, or may not effect accuracy . Different metal expansion rates are the problem and in cold weather the aluminum mounts are more prone to come loose. So as a general rule with this type receiver mount it might be best to use steel on steel.

Looking for some input from people running a sadlak... Need to know what height rings would let the scope just clear the rear apperature with a a 40mm tube. Any one?

I have a Bushnell 4200 4-16x40 with burris extreme tactical low rings and it perfect on the Sadlak. The rear bell is just over the peep sight by maybe 2-3mm.

How do you like the Ultimak? Where did you get it from?

Yes - Brownells

The Ultimak is worth having as an upper handguard even if you dont use the picattinny slots .
The multiple solid clamps greatly stiffen the barrel -
Thus minimizing barrel whip.

Ultimak gets a big vote from me as well.
Rock solid and it's only downside, it's pretty much for forward optics only... But on an m14, that's where this rail shines, offering the lowest optic mounting plane of all m14 forward rails

Thanks guys, a build with forward optics is what I wanted to try out.

Still pondering what I'll put on that rail :)

Just to resurect this thread one more time...
I was wondering if anyone had ever done a side by side height comparison with ARMS 18 and sadlak/smith ent. Would an ARMS and high rings sit at more or less the same height as a sadlak/smith and low rings?

Anyone running a sadlak and a 40mm scope? What height rings are you using?

Thx :)

I took a stripped Federal Ordnance receiver and a machinist's rule and measured the height of the rail above the forward end of the barrel ring for these three scope mounts:

A.R.M.S. # 18 early style - 15/32 "

Sadlak Industries titanium - 21/32 "

Springfield Armory, Inc. Third Generation - 29/32 "
