I'm getting excited, and well why not - this will be the trip of a lifetime. The preparations are interesting: organizing flights, passports, shots, bullets, loads, last minute work on the rifle, scouring maps, reading and rereading everything I have on Africa in general and Tanzania in particular.

This started more than a year ago. There was a post on CGN with a link to a video clip from a Mark Sullivan video at Nitro Express Safaris. Well I watched it, then I watched it again, and again. Then I ordered the all the videos and the book. I watched all the videos and I read the book. Then I emailed Mark Sullivan and told him that despite claims of unethical hunting practices, I saw nothing of that in his work, which I considered the best I had ever seen in any format, and that he raised the bar for all hunters. Some may agree or disagree, but that was my impression and I told him so. Well, next thing I know Mark Sullivan emails me, thanking me for my kind words, and says why don't you come along?? I'm thinking - yea right...like I can afford that, but anyway I email him back - "How much?" He responds, " $16,000.00 door to door for a 7 day safari, $65,000 for a 21 day safari." $16,000!!! for 7 days!!! 2 buffalo, impala, wildebeest, hartebeest, and warthog!!! I can do this!!

Now a year later, both my wife and I are going, the safari has been lengthened to 10 days. We've dropped the plains game so we will have 10 days of buffalo hunting in the Selous Game Reserve!

After the hunting we plan to stay a few days at the Ngorongoro Crater - the remains of a sister volcano to Kilimanjaro, 12 miles across and full of game (all protected) and a few days at Taragire National Park south of Lake Manyara. We had looked into climbing Kilimanjaro, but to do it right is a 21 day trip in itself. While at Ngorongoro we may get to the Serengeti and to Olduvai Gorge, but these side trips would be secondary for us. We had wanted to see Victoria Falls, but we were warned that personal security is an issue in Zimbabwe, and that July is a poor time to view the falls due to low water. In the coarse of a phone call I told Mark we would like to hike across Ngorongoro he said "No, you can't!" "Why not?" I ask. "There's lions!" "Of coarse there's lions, it's Africa, and I've got a gun," I said. He replied, "If you shoot a lion in there, you'd be better off letting it get you!" We can hike in Taragire, and we can hike the highlands surrounding Ngorongoro.

This trip is still a few months off, but the excitement builds daily. I'm sure we will have lots of pics and stories to share when we get back.

You'll enjoy it...........there is nothing like it and you simply can't even compare it to hunting over here. It's like apples and oranges. I have never gotten to Tanzania yet but have hunted in Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe. Maybe next time I will go to Tanzania.....but there are so many places to go over there and just not enough time or money.

Buffalo hunting is great...........and I bet you will be planning your next trip you even get back from the first one.:D

Have you read 'Hunter', by J.A. Hunter? Good read and he hunted in the Ngorongoro Crater back in the good old days. I have talked to other guys that have been there and they said it is incredible.

That sounds fantastic..I have been dreaming of a buffalo hunt for years, and I'll get around to it in the next few years. Hopefully when i'mm 40.:)

Thanks for the kind words. I'm excited now, and I can't imagine how I'll feel by the end of June.

Gate - I hope you get to it sooner than later - it's 50 for me, and I'll be there on my 51st birthday.

Well If you plan on going to Vic-Falls a couple of things to remember: The town itself has a very high crime rate, dont let any of your valuebles out of sight for a second. Last time I was in Rhodesia was before the farm invasions and most of the country was not bad for crime I don't know what it's like now but be carefull.
Enjoy your trip and shoot straight when shooting Buff, they tend to gore when wounded

With the exception of wanting to see Victoria Falls I would have no thought of spending a single dime in that country to help prop up Mugabee. Besides the water levels will be low in the dry season, and the warning I recieved was "Don't go there with anyone you care about!" I got Craig Boddington's video "Boddington on Buffalo" which is shot in the Zambezi Valley, and the fact that the trackers carried AK's was not lost on me.

Couldn't have said it better!
Maybe someday when we got rid of bin Laden and the Islam-##########s we could get rid of 'ol Bob Mugabe, and his hoards from hell.

Boomer I hunted buffalo in the Zambezi Valley. For many years each safari in Zimbabwe that occurs in government concessions is accompanied by a government game scout and yes they had am AK.

For years there have been problems with poachers crossing the river from Zambia and they were poaching the black rhinos in the valley. The Zimbabwe government had a shoot on sight policy for poachers in the valley.....perfectly OK to shoot poachers.......that is why the game scouts with the AK's accompany the hunters on safari.

I was fortunate enough to see a couple of black rhinos when I was hunting buffalo there. Lots of elephant, including an 80 pounder, several lions and a couple of leopards.

Zimbabwe is a beautiful country and I hate seeing what is happening to it. Everyone there would be a lot better off without Mugabe.

I'm plannign plains game in 207 with my son, nothing as exciting as Buffalo in the Selous though. We will probably go to RSA or Namibia.

I'm hoping to go in summer '07 as well if I have any money left over from building my house. "Only" plains game, but that's just fine with me.

Boomer, you and your wife are living a dream of mine. Before I am finished from hunting I told myself that I have to go to Africa and do a hunt. Good luck to you and your wife with harvesting an animal and also your safety. I will be checking for pictures. When is the hunt by the way?

This may sound like rain on the parade. Get straight right nowIT IS NOTIts just reality...Pictures will not I repeat NOT do justice to those animals that when you show them to people here 99.9% have no comprehension of size, shape, etc. So you'll keck your arse for the rest of your days if you dont hang atleast one on your wall..Check into that price of shipping etc,and plan it into your budget..You'll hate yourslef if you dont

I looked into the shipping of 2 skulls - about $500.00 USD. I'm not planning on bringing home hides due to the weight. Some bilitong would be good - not sure if I can bring it in yet, but I had some South African freinds who did some years ago.

Get the capes tanned there which means they'll sail through inspection here, and because their fleshed out and tanned you can do shoulder mounts here for like 0$ extra shipping. Trust me if you dont you may has well start planning for you second trip now, cause you'll want em
