I recently got a pistol light and was looking for a new holster to accommodate it. Ended up getting a Safariland SLS holster from EE.

Everything looks good at first. However when I put it on and tried the new draw strokes, I realized the hood is not automatically locking when I flipped it up. Most of the time I have to tug on it to get it on the lock position. This is my first holster with active retention, so I’m not sure if this is to be expected. I have sprayed oil in the mechanism but that didn’t seem to help. If anyone has more experience with this type of holster please let me know.

Thanks in advance.

Contact Safariland and get them to send you a new hood assembly.

Or

Ditch that POS, lol.

Silicone WD40 in the hood mechanism helps to smooth things out. If that doesn’t work, contact Safariland.

What pistol and light combo is it for? The model will be stamped on the reverse near the shank. There are some subtle differences amongst the models, especially when lights are in play.

If the SLS isn’t being obstructed by anything it should lock, right gun wrong gun or no gun. It’s the ALS that’s very sensitive to variations.

I have a P226 with X300U. The stamped info on the back says:

6005-2770
P-226R DAO
SF X 200
1207

From what I read online, Surefire x200 and x300 have the same housing, just different lumen output. I guess it’s made for a double action only sig, but I’m pretty sure the DOA model has the same external dimensions as the DA/SA, just different hammer and fire control group. So I don’t know what seems to be the problem here.

Just to clarify, when there is no gun in the holster, the SLS seems to work fine. Again I have nothing to compare to, but it locks when flipped into up right position. It’s when the gun is inserted, it doesn’t want to lock when flipped up.

It sounds like when inserting the pistol into the holster it is somehow stretches the holster's width or flaring the hood lever causing some stiction on lock spring. What kind of grips are you using on the P226?

x-200 is shorter than an x-300U

x-200:

Your holster is for an x-200, at the bottom of the spot where the light goes is a black plastic disk covering where the light lens will be. Push that out it is just friction fit, this might give you a little more room for the 300u and allow the gun to seat fully.

Thanks for the info about the size difference of x200 and x300. Pop out the disk last night and it seems to work fine. Gonna try to mod the disk so it can be kept while allowing the holster to function properly.

For those who were asking, I have the standard E2 grip on the pistol, and the holster is an older model without the ALS function.

I wouldn't worry about modding it to get the disk back in. I have been running mine without them for decades with no issues. Plus as an added bonus you can see when you left you light on with the disk out, and stuff does not collect in the holster, it just falls out

Looks like you found a solution. I have used SLS holsters for x200 with x300 and x300u lights and they typically work. The issue may be caused because the holster you have is for a DAO which runs a bobbed hammer and the SLS hood may be shorter to compensate for that. Regardless if it works now don't worry too much about the light disk.
