That method sounds unsafe to me.
When I walk, my rifle is loaded, one in the chamber, safety on. I have developed my own method though. I cut the strap, top and bottom, put in snaps like usually found on packs. I sling it diagonally over my neck, and tighten it up. When I see a animal, rifle with one hand, release the snap with the other>>>>>rifle falls right into my hands.
Long walks find me fidgety, causes too much movement, distracts me. So that is my solution.
