Safe hunting practices?

That is the most retarded thing I have ever read...

That's how you shoot yourself, your kid or a buddy.

Like seriously though, how f@cking stupid are you? Here's the smart way to do it, load a round, put the safe on and keep your booger hook off the kill switch, if you don't like that method, leave your rifle unloaded until it's time to miss your shot because you spooked the animal you were going to shoot.

Either load and safe or load magazine and cycle. Pick one. Shooting IPSC for a while made me more comfortable with a loaded chamber so that's how I hunt. I'm comfortable and white tails can give you 3 seconds to shoot.

My uncle used to do this until his rifle went off in a circle of his hunting partners. The story I was told is it went off and hit the dirt a few feet away. Scary.

I only load a round if I'm going to shoot or if I'm by myself. I'd rather lose out on a piece of game than lose a hunting partner

As a rule, we unload safely as we approach other people. One person in passing it's just slung, but walking back to camp it's unloaded safely before we get there. No offence, but maybe your uncle hunted old school, with some rum.

If the rifle is dropped or the rear of the bolt (firing pin) is hit hard enough the rifle will fire. You decide if you have muzzle control in those situations.

With the firing pin lowered a bump of the butt of the stock, as can happen when you trip and fall, will discharge the round.

I used to sleep in the back of my P/U truck in Bear Country and was my preferred method over the safety only.
Gun was on a shelf over the front of box ready to go by lifting the bolt handle should something decide to come knocking in the night.
But, to each their own and yes I fully understand the ramifications both legal and ethical.

Round in the chamber, safety on, RIFLE IN YOUR HANDS, 100% muzzle control. If I have to sling the rifle for any reason, I unload before I do. Same thing for climbing over fences, up and down ladders, whatever. If I have positive control of the safety and trigger, I will have a round in the chamber. If not, it's unloaded.

The same people that carry their rifles like that , probably don't own binoculars, and use their riflescope to identify unknown objects in the field.

That method sounds unsafe to me.

When I walk, my rifle is loaded, one in the chamber, safety on. I have developed my own method though. I cut the strap, top and bottom, put in snaps like usually found on packs. I sling it diagonally over my neck, and tighten it up. When I see a animal, rifle with one hand, release the snap with the other>>>>>rifle falls right into my hands.

Long walks find me fidgety, causes too much movement, distracts me. So that is my solution.
