I have a CZ Shadow with no decocking lever and want to know what are some safe techniques for decocking the hammer and holstering the pistol if the hammer is cocked. I want to practice drawing and firing first shot in double action.

Lower the hammer by hand

Use both hands. with the gun in your strong hand, Keeping your finger out of trigger, grip the hammer with your weak hand, pull back/down on the hammer to release the tension on the hammer, while holding the hammer with your weak hand, insert your strong hand trigger finger into the trigger guard, squeeze the trigger, and ease the hammer back up with your weak hand.

With a little practice it becomes a nice smooth process.

Keep your movements deliberate and precise. Do not allow yourself to become distracted or loose concentration.

Practice on an empty gun.

I hope this what you were looking for.

i was taught the same by an RO officer, but he added tilting the gun to the side(ex.pistol in right hand tilt gun sideways towards the left, lower hammer with left hand.

same way you practiced when you did it for your pal course.

lower the hammer with left hand (thumb and index) while pressing the trigger slowly.

Sure, I keep mine vertical, but have seen shooters do that. What ever works best for you.

The one thing I didn't include in the Origional post was to keep te muzzle pointed down range, and controlled at all times throughout the process.

yup! and even at the "safety table" (in ipsc)allways hammer down or decock in safe direction! :)

I tilt mine to the side as well. It avoids an odd twist and angle to the wrist and encourages a firmer hold on the hammer.

A lot of folks go with another method. THey put their thumb between the hammer and slide, push down and back to take up the hammer pressure then pull the trigger and roll their thumb up and out. I tried this method a bunch but found for me that it either ended up with the last bit of the roll out pinching my thumb or that due to the recess the hammer fits into it fell with a little bit of a snap at the end. So I went with pinching the hammer. I found this works well with hammers that have the hole in the end. It would not work well with the traditional single thumb cocking "finger".

I know that Slavex from around here uses and preaches the thumb method. For him and many others it works well. But I just can't do it with my "fat thumb" without either hurting myself or losing control over the hammer at the end of the travel.

Whichever method you use be totally certain you get and maintain a good hold on the hammer. For example one fellow I was showing how to lower the hammer kept trying to use the end of his thumb and knuckle from the first finger. The knuckle got in the way and prevented him being able to fully control the hammer all the way down in the same way that using the ends of the thumb and first finger does.

Watch this video at 2:08.... his guy has a pretty slick way to decock his shadow. I believe he's a member of this board, good techniques.

thumb on hammer....lower it. Your thumb is in the way all the way forward..on the serrations of the hammer....that is why there are serrations on the hammer....and not on the sides. THe pinching works for some...but I have seen the hammer slip out from between the thumb and finger. Biggest thing is to have the thumb on the hammer securely FIRSt; then press the trigger and lower the hammer. IT is not a race....take your time.

I missed it:confused: What part of the vid showed the DC?

m

He just puts his support hand thumb in between the cocked hammer and frame, pulls the trigger releasing the hammer to hit his thumbnail and then slowly lowers the hammer.

Did he just shove his thumb in there, pull the trigger and slowly pull out his thumb??

Yep, pretty slick and fairly safe. Well, as safe as manually decocking a pistol can be.

thats tim in the video using the slavex method previously mentioned

funny i was going to post one of my videos where he does that as well
great minds

I was using the pinch method, and adopted the "Slavex method" Tiggrot uses in the video posted when Slavex showed it to me.

A couple of weeks before I witnessed an AD by a shooter using the pinch method when the hammer slipped.

With any method, muzzle control is paramount.
