Safe

Agreed go real or just buy a cabinet. Everything in between is just heavy and for looks. Only a real safe offers real protections. The rest are child resistant only.

Some truth in that but even a relatively inexpensive gun safe (<$1000?) eliminates the legal requirement to store handguns trigger locked. Not a big deal if you only own 3-4 but if you have a lot it is an advantage. If we are talking theft prevention I'm not sure things like taking steps to make your house and gun room more secure as well as adding a monitored alarm system aren't equally important.

Don't totally agree. For sure a nice full-sized, fire-proof 500lb safe is the way to go if you have the space and money, but even a cheap safe with the locking bolts and heavier gauge steel is a far better deterrent than a cabinet. A lower-end safe is still more difficult (though not impossible obviously) to pry/cut open than a flimsy cabinet, and if it is not bolted to the wall of floor like it should be, it is a lot more difficult to carry out a 125lb+ low end safe than a 30lb cabinet.

I should add that by low end/cheap, I mean $400-600+ depending on how much space you need. Sentry safes like the T6-331 and T8-331 (many places, e.g. costco sell them) are ok if you only have a few pistols. Add $2-300 if you want one with fire protection.

I just sold a couple Mosins to a retired police officer and he has the real deal safes, extremely heavy etc. He said basically, anything to slow down the bad guys is a help, from gun rooms, to security systems to safes bolted down with good locks! The crooks will generally look for a softer/quicker target! I have a man cave/gun room in the works 3 concrete walls and a steel door but the 4rth wall needs cement blocks and more locks/dead bolts etc. Security system goes in this spring!
