Ive been looking over the internet for info on wildcat 303

I am in the research portion of building a ross action based target rifle that I intend to shoot from minimun 600m up to 1000m

I crossed a couple threads about elwood epps cartridges and how some were safe for rifles like the p14 but not so with the no1 and no4

What load with what size bullet could get me closest to my goal of reaching of 600-1000 while being safe

I have a 7mm rem mag that I had built on a military ross action, it is just fine, if the brass will take it a ross will take it...

One thing you must consider is the shape of the cartridge. Epps-ing a .303 usually results in feeding problems with the Ross. Of course, single feeding eliminates that issue altogether.

Why bother wildcatting at all?

Ross rifling will handle the .312" BTM bullet very well.

The long barrel of th Ross gives you about an extra 150 ft/sec by my chronograph.

Load to Mark 8 specs and you are looking at 2550 ft/sec (which is 2700 in the Ross barrel), which is quite ample for 600 to 1000 yards.

7.62 NATO M-118 Ball (the match/sniper load) is shot regularly at those ranges and it is a 173 slug at 2550. The Ross gives you a clear 150 ft/sec advantage right there..... and it costs you nothing!

People do tend to sell the old .303 short. At any given load, it is actually a ballistic duplicate of the oh-so-modern ultraspiffy 7.62 NATO.

The only reason we ever changed was to keep the Americans from a MASSIVE hissy-fit. The .303 was JUST as good for a full-power round, the .280/.30 was a BETTER assault-rifle round, but they were not AMERican. So they went into the trash.

Theres nothing wrong with a Ross in my opinion, my Brother built one in 458 Win. Mag. several years ago and its smoother and faster to use than my 458 bolt gun.
A friend and fellow F-class shooter is building one in 7 SAUM.
