Hi all,

As I put together the parts for my first F-Class build, I've had to accept that my current safe is not tall enough to fit the rifle, so I'll need to invest in a new one. I've looked at a few Amsec models, since I had a dealer conveniently nearby, but I'm undecided on the brand right. I'm really in the research phase at this point. Anyway, given that F-Class and other long range rifles are typically longer than others, I was wondering what you folks used for your safes, and if you can share any wisdom from your experience.

Thanks,

I have a Centurion two door 21 gun safe...................If I remove the top shelf, I can fit a 60" long rifle.......With the shelf in I can fit a 51" long rifle.............My AICS Tac/Precision rig with a 26.5" barrel is 46" long and has lots of room to take in and out........

Yea I have a Costco safe as well and have to keep my precision rig outside of the safe and I just lock up the bolt. It'll fit without the shelf like Mark says but I need the shelf for other stuff.

eventually I'll get a larger one.

Why? Read the laws and remember why you are locking the stuff up. It is easy to satisfy the laws without spending money! Remove the bolt and store it under your bed or put a trigger lock under your bed.
Instead of buying a safe buy another gun! Support gun control!

Ian, put simply, I live in downtown Toronto, within an apartment building. Since I do not intend to be a victim twice should I be burglarized (once by the thief, then by the 'safe' storage laws), I'll invest in another safe. It will not change my intended time-line for purchasing one of your stocks either.. but that does remind me.. can you recall what the average length of a rifle you've built with an H&H stock and 30" barrel? 48", 50"?

Mmattox, which "brand" of Costco safe do you have? There have been a few..

Skullboy, thanks for info about the Centurion brand, I'll look into those.

I lock mine in a vault for the protection of my firearms . My neighborhood does not have a great reputation therefore I lock them up so that they cannot be stolen from me.
My Costco safe requires the removal of a piece of angled steel that the shelf sits on.

Guys, don't forget to support Canadian companies..

Canadian Safe Manufacturing makes an excellent product, and is very competive with Cosco

Canadian Safe Manufacturing is the number one contender right now, definitely. Though I could buy more guns if I bought a Costco safe ;)

Anybody know how much Canadian Safe would charge to ship one of their medium size units to Alberta?

There was a thread here on CGN a few years ago (which I can't seem to find), and someone had mentioned they had one of their small safes shipped to either Alberta or BC.. it was a few hundred dollars at the time.

Your best bet is to contact them and find out -- they are quite friendly. I'll be visiting their factory in a few weeks time to get a closer look at their safes.

most safes without the top shelf should fit..

You're right, I suppose I'm trying to find one that has an opening which would allow the barrel to stick through so I don't lose all of the top shelf. The Canadian Manufacturing Safe site has drawing that appear to have those, but I won't really have a better idea until I see one. If anyone has pics of their own that they can share, I'd appreciate that before driving out to Hamilton.

Just from a laymans view (new to the sport), what's preventing you from using a 3" hole saw from below to the shelf? The cut edge can be covered with the door edge guard you buy from Canadian Tire, providing a nice soft pad for the barrel to rest against.

I'm rather suprised safe manufacturers don't provide this as an option, but I'd certainly modify my shelf to keep an expensive rifle in a safe (and you out of safe-storage hot water!)

Take out the shelf and use a hole saw on it and put it back in.
The barrel just sticks through, that worked great for mine.

I have a Stack-on 24 gun safe (not the cabinet) that I got from Canadian Tires on sale off 3 year ago at that time 60% off. Fits my 6BR with a 28" barrel no problems and still probably with 8-10" to spare. Keep an eye on their flyer or website and take rainchecks.

Stack-On 24-gun Fire Resistant, Convertible Safe
Product #75-5600-4

I've got a 29" barrel on my M70 300 WM builts by ATRS. My Liberty Safe has a hole cut in the shelf for long barrelled shotguns. Perfect spot for long barrelled rifles.

The only bad thing is that I'm running out of room...again.

Thanks all for the idea to drill or cut holes in the top shelves. I had a chance to inspect a few different brands of safes, and (unlike my current one) every one I've seen has shelves that can be removed so I can cut those easily enough. That's likely what I'll do, but I also realize that I may be able to build my own replacement shelving to meet my needs.

Cheers!
