Safest way to go about a long distance trade

I'm going to be looking to trade one of my pistols for a different pistol (with any luck). What does everyone do in regards to transferring registration? I realize if both parties live close to each other it's easy but what if it's across the country? Does one party call in to initiate the one transfer and then the second party have to call in or threeway call? I was recently told by a CGN member that they wouldn't trust me because I have a feedback of "1" so I just want to make sure this can be as easy and straightforward as possible and follow the normal protocol (if there is one when it comes to RCMP/CFO)

Seller calls RCMP and starts the transfer. A reference number is generated. Buyer then calls RCMP and uses the number to complete the transfer. Wait for transfer letter from CFO and then pistol can change hands.

If it's a trade of 1 restricted for another, why don't you guys both call to initiate the transfer, after a couple weeks, the paperwork will be done and you will both have registration paperwork for each others pistols... then you can both go to the post office and mail it to one another. I think there is less to worry about with restricted trades as the cfp would have all the info they would to follow up in case there was any funny business.

We all started with 0 transactions. I think your long-standing presence and contribution to the forum also counts for something. I always make a point of speaking to the buyer/seller by phone to alleviate any doubt. I find this to be a good way of reassuring all parties.

I traded restricted handguns twice with other CGNers. Both times, we each called the CFO independently and emailed/texted the reference number to each other so we could complete the transfer process.

I don't like the three-way call approach since you're effectively giving away private info to a third party (date of birth and place of birth). This information is normally kept from private sellers and is all someone needs (along with your address and phone number, which you usually provide to the seller) to steal your RPAL identity.

For long distance trades I have one rule.

If you have 10+ positive ratings and are a contributing member, we both initiate and trade, and ship at the same time. Your rating has bought you credibility.

If you’re a new member with low or no ratings and minimal contribution, you send me your portion of the trade and once received I fill my end of the deal. 100+ Positive ratings in my opinion, has bought me enough credibility and trust.

Google Norman Wells, NT. ALL of my buy, sell or trades are long distance.
For trades (in the middle of one right now) both call CFO and initiate the transfer.
Once transfer is complete (always get the CFO to email you the Notice of Transfer) both parties ship.
Communicate even if the slightest thing happens don't just drop off the radar.
DO NOT ship yours and wait for the other person to ship theirs

There is very little risk involved. Make sure you exchange clear pictures with a request to show something specific to ensure it is a legit picture with the serial number. Exchange pictures of the Registration. Then both call in your info to initiate the transfer of your own pistol. Once you have a reference number, give it to the other party and they call in to complete their portion of the transfer. Then you wait. Ontario is about 7 business days. B.C. is 24 hours.

Once both transfers are approved by the respective CFO's, you then get a STATT to take it to the post office. Get full insurance and that automatically triggers signature option. Take a picture of the package before it goes.


There is always a degree of trust with online sales, but you know the other person has the gun, regardless of your trader rating, and the CFO verifies the ownership is legit.
