Safety buying on EE? Recourse and tutorial?

Hello,


I'm looking at making my first purchase on the EE when it dawned on me. What recourse do I have if I send electronic money transfer and the seller doesn't want to ship? I can't unship the money can I?

As a newbie on the trading game, should I draw up a contract and get e-mail copy of drivers license or PAL or something to know who I am dealing with and know who to target for legal recourse should the need arise. I'm sure the guy is fine and all, but I just want to be cautious and I'm about to drop a lot of money. (for me anyways).

Any thoughts?
 
The one thing you can do is look at the trader rating on the persons profile. You should also get there information as well to cover your *ss.
 
I think there is always going to be a certain inherent risk in buying thing from someone personally, but so far I've had nothing but good experience with the EE. I would try to buy only from those who have feedback, posts, and ideally if someone knows them or someone you know has posted feedback. The person should be willing to give you their real name, address and phone number if you are buying an expensive item from them. Then you can call them and verify that they live there. I think if someone is so afraid of giving out their name, I wouldn't buy from them. They want your money,they should be willing to take responsibility by giving you contact information.
 
I have done one successful trade and have the second on the go. How are you suppose to sell if you have no trader rating? I think the best way is to get all the sellers info before dealing with them. If it wasn't for the first member that trusted me I would still have no trader rating. Just my two cents.

thats exactly how i feel, im in the midst of trying to sell a couple rifles on EE, but i get the feeling alot of people arent seriously interested because i have no trader rating.

so im not sure what to do...

if you've sold things on eBay before, your history there could be referred to. at the same time, there's a third party rating system that's outside of everything out there, it's entire purpose is ratings tracking w/dealing reviews. it's called heatware, you can go to heatware.com to check it out.

as an example for reference, look up Mr. Friendly when you go there. all my ratings are in reference to computer hardware I've recently bought or sold...which often costs as much as firearms and are things a lot more finicky and more apt to not work upon arrival then firearms, so having a positive rating there is worth it's weight in gold! :D
 
I started building my (modest) trader rating by buying and selling small items.

You may find people more willing to take a risk if its only for $20 or so.

traders rating, traders rating , traders rating .

buyers take all the risk so show some faith and buy a few things first .

warning signs are lack of communication, lack of disclosure and no/fuzzy pics .

i havent been stung yet but i have had problems but experiences have told me not to over react , try to resolve it like gentlemen.

i dont try to gouge people so even if someone backs out from a deal, no biggie cos someone else will buy it .

just remember this is our hobby , not our livelyhood.

Well for what its worth, I got a scan of the guy's drivers license and pal, and that was good enough for me. Turns out everything worked really well and I got a fair deal on exactly what was promised. The seller had virtually no trader rating, but if I had a drivers license and PAL pictures, I figure that should be enough to fight back should the deal go sour and he try to rob me. Of course the PAL and drivers license could be faked or stolen, but what are the odds of that? Matching PAL and drivers license is probably difficult to do. Anyways, I just wanted to say that everything worked great and I feel a lot better knowing that my first EE purchase was a good one.
 
A valid PAL# and coinciding home address is all thats required to do business on this site. This guy is a LOT, more trusting than you realize. He just provided you with a great starting point for identity theft (the scan of his drivers license which no doubt has his signature).

Personally, I would of backed out of the transaction THE MINUTE I was asked for ID over and above what is required for a routine purchase on CGN.

Right! Usually you join a forum to contribute and to learn from others. Then you start buying gear from reputable members. Later you start selling your own stuff.

Additionally EMT is very safe as you have a bank account to refer to. I recommend using EMT only with rookie members.
