There is a seriously good program on tonight on Animal Planet; Safety in Bear Country. It is being re-broadcast again at midnight (Mtn time).

It's not your typical left-wing ####. It deals realistically with all aspects of bear behaviour, attack/defense reponse to humans and practical ways to avoid bears, deter attacks or defend if that is the last resort, including bear sprays, firearms etc...

^ No.

It is a very informative program. Stephen Herrero, Gary Shelton, Parks Canada, Yukon F&W, Doug Suess, Alaska F&W and a helluva a lot of other people that I don't remember were involved in making it.

Theres a lot of reference to organizations and resources from B.C., in the credits, so I think the driving force behind it was some organization or people out of B.C.

I guess you'd have to see it and judge for yourself but for me personally, I thought it is one of the best programs I have ever seen that covers bear threat response, behavior, interaction with other bears and with people. I watched it twice and I will watch it again if I get the chance.

They talk about pepper spray and mention firearms... only briefly... but the fact is they do advocate firearms as legitimate defense against bears.

It's not a left-wing, David Suzuki kind of BS program.

Are talking about the video "Staying Safe in Bear Country'?

If so it is considered to be the standard bear safety video used by those who deliver Bear Safety and Awareness training. It is a pretty good product overall, there are some areas for improvement. (The music gets pretty tiring after about 40 times through it though)

There are a couple of other videos that are decent as well, made after this one and heavily featuring Herrero and his approach to bear spray and defence again.

Cheers

It's the same video we make our summer students watch before we
send them into the field.

The girl who runs into bears on the video seems to remain rather calm. I've always wondered if someone was behind her with a rifle?
