I just bought a 1895 guide gun. Haven't had a chance to fire it yet, but I'm considering removing the safety on it. IMHO, the hammer at half #### has been working great for some 150 years on lever guns, I think that this is a "lawyer safety". Has anyone removed theirs and used the saddle ring replacement? Do you find that the safety is a PITA, or is it a non-issue?

On a side issue, my son was telling me today that it would be really nice if someone came up with a lever action with a transfer bar like the Henry, but where the action could be DA/SA, hing of like a revolver. It would be great for someone in a tight corner. I had never thought of that, but it sure would be a nifty feature on a guide or brush gun.

Oh, and I'd like to know - are the LeverEvolution loads suitable for bear defense?

Take the stock off and there is a set screw in the receiver that will hold your safety in the hot and ready position. A lot cheaper then a replacement.

What I do on all of mine with the safeties is push the safety to the off position and slip a 1/4" rubber O ring into the groove where they put the red paint and bingo your done as I will not be able to be pushed back on safe without removing the O ring.
Regards.

As for the LeverEvolution, nuthin beats a good 405gr cast GC or heavier for penetration. I once dropped a bull moose at 55 yards on a full out run with a 405gr GC going at about 1650fps thru both shoulders. It stopped him like he ran into a cement wall and after passing thru him it continued on thru an 8" spruce tree. I would have a hard time believing the the Hornady stuff would do as well as a hard cast bullet loaded correctly.

As stated above cast bullet are hard to beat in the 45-70. 405gr are great but my everyday shooter/hunter is a 350gr GC bullet and when im out on my horse in bear country I take 500gr GC rounds.
