Calum, you know it for sure? where from? Anyhow, you are wrong. They are not used by Russian border guards and there is no military police in Russia. In Russia, saiga is considered HUINTING gun. And as a hunting gun it is next to nothing. Balance, reliability, weight, shot efficiency, you know. It's good only to make noise.

Yes, alot of people in Russia use it as a hunting gun as well as for skeet shooting... and some say that with practice you can become good at it. I also read that some Saiga shotgun owners in the USA use it for deer hunting (with slugs).
I agree with you that it is not an ideal or traditional hunting shotgun. There are many better choices. Saigas are more suitable for home defense, bear defense and other similar types of situations.
Saigas have a reputation of being very reliable and having the ability to cycle all kinds of loads (once properly broken in of course). After all, they are based on the AK action.
I have handled Saigas abroad but never had the chance to shoot one.
There are a lot of Saiga fans in The USA, Europe etc. They even have their own forums. There has to be a reason for their popularity.
I think they are fun. I wish they were not prohibited here...

general opinion is that saiga shotguns are NOT reliable and are rather sensitive to loads. And it's a specialized saiga shotgun forum, anyhow. I have not been to Russia for more than ten years now and I cannot say whether saigas are used by OMON, I doubt of it. I put this question on the forum I mentioned, we will wait for the unswer. For sure, they ARE used by private security agencies, but I think only because they don't want them to be armed with real weapon.

Tozman, I've got the answer on the Russian forum: OMON does NOT use saiga. So, I invite you to be more careful about the information you diffuse on the forum. As for MVD you mentioned, MVD means simply Interior Ministry, and its troops equally do not use saiga. I repeat, it is used only by private security agencies, because they don't allow them to be armed with something real.
For all saiga fans. Gentlemen, I want you to understand that saiga is NOT AK-74, athough based on the same mechanism. What was good (even excellent I dare say) for the rifle, works bad for the shotgun.

The information you are getting is conflicting with what I have. Maybe the Saigas are being used in very limited quantities? and only by a few units ?
