Sako 308 Value??

Just inherited a Sako 308 Forester L579 from my uncle. Originally purchased in 60's I think. Looks to be in pretty good shape - only a couple dings in the stock and a few numbers scratched into the barrel. I'm not looking to sell, but I would like to know what my new toy is worth. Can someone that knows Sako's give me an estimate please? It is the gun on the bottom in the pictures.

That's a Sako Deluxe, and it's worth somewhere north of a $1,000. More like $1,500, with no scratches and in pristine condition.

I'll say a little prayer of forgiveness for whoever scratched something on the barrel....actually, I'd rather put a curse on them and all their offspring for a thousand generations, but I'm trying to be nicer in my old age.
 
There was a brand new Deluxe in .243 Win in the EE that sold. Asking price was $1250 IIRC.
 
As Tumbleweed said, just over $1000 as is. I have the same model but non-deluxe, which is usually worth a couple hundred less. Nice gift. Curses on the "scratcher" indeed!
 
Sold and bought a near new 579 308 varmint for about $850. Seen VG hunting rifles for sale for about the same $750-800. The 243 that recently went was apparently new, which would be unusual a rifle that age and therefore especially collectable.

I would never forgive the bastard, unless he used it as a club to beat off a grizzly.

I assume that makes it more valuable? Any guesses on how much more?

The scratches are the original owner's SIN number - scratched on each side of the barrel and another time on the bolt.

Cleaned her up and took her to the range today, sans scope, just to see if she would fire and had a bit of trouble with the bolt sticking after the trigger was pulled. Just a tad on the dangerous side! I figured out how to get the bolt apart - and back together - cleaned and lubed and will try again another time.

Any recommends on what spec of scope to put on this type of rifle?

Some dude scratched his SIN number on a rifle like that? An act like that would deflate it's value greatly.
 
It is a good thing you don't want to sell it! They would figure out a price, without scratched in SIN numbers, then cut that figure in half, if he was in a good mood, because of the ID marks in three places.
Actually, from what I have seen of older Sakos selling, they don't fetch as much as they should. I saw a mid 60s L61, 270, the type with the velvety smooth action and in excellent shape, at a large gun show for $700, and it was still there at the end of the day.

I have a finnbear custom deluxe in 7mm RM I bought in '75. Such a beautiful gun, it never got to see the hunting grounds. It sits in the safe. but I'm thinking of using the action for a custom rifle.
Funny how their not worth as much as a new one on the shelf?

I too have a Sako deluxe Finnbear sitting unfired in my safe, if it wasn't so damn pretty I might shoot it. FS
