I just bought the one off Epps this morning and was wondering if any of you guys have one in 300 wsm and what are your thoughts on the rifle? Do you like how it feels, how is the recoil? This is my second Finnlight but never did shoot the first one I purchased and always regreted selling it.
Are all the actions on the wsm's a sm or magnum? Is the BBl length around 24" on all wsm's

Cheers!!

first off, thanks for saving me some cash....:D...had my eye on that one...

I had a 300 WSM in a Kimber...had 165's up to 3150...never tried a 180....nothing wrong with the 300 WSM....had Sako 75's in 6.5 Swede,22-250 and 270...great rifles.....if yours is built on the SM action and not the V action it'll be a nice short powerful 30 caliber...

I hear some early 75's in WSM's used the long V action.

Yes they were with a blocked mag & a 22 7/16" barrel. Not a great combo IMO, that's why I didn't buy one the first year they came out. The new SM action much better.

I had a 75 300 WSM finnlight SM 24". It had average accuracy. Out of the many Sako's I have had over the years, it was the second most stubborn to get to shoot ;)

150gr Accubonds would clock in the mid 3200's & 180gr Accubonds ran right around 2900 FPS.

H4350 was the best powder I found. I here the new short mag powders are much better :)

How is the SM action much better then say a blocked one? Does this greatly effect accuracy?

Cheers!!

Accuracy likely would be the same, but the V action is longer and heavier. The reason they made the SM action is nobody wanted a .300wsm in an action made for a .375H&H. They designed it specifically for that family of cartridges, instead of making it fit into the .308 action like everyone else did...

Im not overly worried about weight, infact I like my rifles a bit heavier then most as I find the recoil is less harsh and it swings and holds better for me. I was just worried that I may loose some accuracy or it may be less safe???

Cheers!!

Won't be less safe, just longer. However, if you ever wanted to rebarrel some day to .300wm or .375 H&H you are good to go...:D

There is a very good chance that yours will be the SM action, as they only made them on the V action for 1 year. The weight difference is 3/4 lb.

Its says its a 22 7/16 BBL which were only on the early runs I believe. Wow 3/4 lb is quite a bit.

Hello Scott...I have one of the 300 wsm finnlites built on the earlier v action. It is an awsome rifle. I suspect Sako sold them as a quick and easy way to break into the sm market until the could develope there sm action, but this is just speculation on my part.
You don't have to worry about the rifle being unsafe or less accurate. If you were to have a worry it would be how it feeds but mine has always fed flawlessly. It does however have a tendency to groove the brass a bit from the case rubbing on the bump in the mag. I agree with Wookie, one in a sm would be better, but if you don't mind a little extra weight and a little bit of wasted bolt travel to cycle a round then who cares. As far as accuracy, mine easily shot factory winny 180,s sub moa and my 180 gr. sst's and then 180 gr. interbonds using win. 760 shot so well at 3000 fps that I never tried anything else. If I was going to do it over again I would start with trying to load up some 168 gr. tsx's or ttsx's. An accurate load at around 3150 fps. would be freakin awesome.
I never felt the recoil to be bad but muzzle jump at the range was considerable and irritating. I thought I would be spending more time at the range so I put an OPS muzzle break on mine. It made it sweet as sugar to shoot but if I had known I wasn't going to get to the range with it as much as I liked i wouldn't have bothered.
Fit is a personal thing. My finnlit fit me like a glove ( not OJ's) but you might be different. Regardless, Sako's are great rifles with good triggers and one of the best factory dm's so I thinks you will enjoy your new rifle for some time. Hope yours works out well for you...Happy hunting

Well i have the v action Finnlight in 300 WSM. Im having a hard time to find a consistent load. Im disapointed in this rifle. I think im going to bed it and see if that makes a diff. Can you guys post some loads? Whould any one know what the stock tensions should be set at? I called stoeger canada and they said Sako doesnt have stock tensions.. (thats bull) I know it makes a huge diff.
Sorry for the hijack

Viper,

I have the same rifle. The barrel came from the factory with no stock tension, ie, free-floated. Bedding issue is possible with the factory rifle.

I get excellent groups with:
63.0 H4350 and 180 Nosler Partitions
67.0 H4350 and 165 Barnes tsx.
