Question for you Sako owners - why do some like the Mod 75 much better than the Mod 85? Are they somehow better? Please enlighten me on the differences.

Thank you.

There are not a lot of differences, but IMO the recoil lug on the 75 is a better design than the 85. Also, the 75 style stock is a much better fit for me. If you are looking at a finnlight, the barrel contour is thinner on the 75's.

The mag release is different on the 85, but no big deal.

I've owned both and there are differences for sure. The 85 has a different design where the bolt handle meets the bolt body, looks like there is something missing and just plain ugly. The goofy childproof magazine latch is just that, goofy, but it can be fixed with a file.

Yeah, its a little odd there...

For the changes they made, they could have just left the 75 alone and put it in a classic stock.

use the search function.... been discussed a lot.
Not on good terms with the search function on this site. Never can get it to work 4me.

Thanks to others who commented on the differences. I seem to be hearing the M75 is the better design.

I had two 85's and they were both great rifles and shot to boot! I didn't like the original stock they came with but the new ones have that rubber coated stock and it seems to be the ticket.

I still have a Finnlight 25-06 for sale ;)

My biggest beef with the 85 is the $1800 price tag, it's just not worth that much $$ considering the cheap ass "plastikka" stock on the syn/ss version. My perference is for the 75 both in terms of cost and fit (stock). Having said that I have replaced all the injection moulded synthetic stocks on my 75's with mcmillan replacement stocks.

IMO, ever since Beretta USA bought out Sako, the product would be of lesser craftmenship / caliber than before.

I'd give a preference nod to the M-75 and AV L61R prior to that one. Better cheek rest. I looks like the new M 85 Hunter is doing a cheek rest design that is half way between, the older M-75 and a Winchester M-70. Still the older style of the M-75 or AV are preferred.

Not as bad as Remlin though!;)

No, but bad enough they lessened the quality of a great rifle to "Americanize it" . Mind you, I have not handled a m85 since their release....and would only consider one in the Kodiak or Laminate stainless model.

Thats another reason why I'm sticking to the m75 rifles, to add more to my collection.w:h:

I own one of the very first SAKO 75's Stainless Synthetic in 300 Win. Mag.
This is by far, the finest firearm you could ever expect to use.
1. Sako Stainless is high quality...will not rust or pit...(my buddy bought a browning stainless stalker...had pitted rust in 6 months...)
I use this gun as a trapper and I beat the crap out of this gun..and it remains solid.
2..It has a 4 shot clip which is the slickest clip you will ever insert into a firearm....solid stainless with a super positive lock and release system.
3..Silky smooth action....you can't even tell if a round is chambered unless you look while you are cycling the bolt!
4..Offset pistol grip is fit formed to the contours of your hand..synthetic stock is wicked..
5..Rock solid mounts formed into the receiver....I usually carry my gun by the scope tube!!
6..Super accurate rifle...I had a semi before my sako and was renown for taking lots of shots....first time out after reloading for my new Sako I put 5 rounds into a 2" circle @ 200 yards...

SAKO 75 ALL THE WAY!!

I have an 85 in 7-08 and really like it. For the price, the stock feels a bit cheap but I think with a nice McMillan edge on it, it would be about perfect for me.

I quite like the 85s. I have two of them now; a Finlight 270WSM and a Bavarian 375, and plan on a third in a varmint model. Accuracy is excellent. The Finnlight groups anything at .5MOA or better. A colleague of mine has the Finnlight 7-08 and it too has phenomenal accuracy.

The average sticker price in most shops is a bit inflated, but there are always deals to be found. Bought my Finnlight for $1400 and my Bavarian for $1300. My buddy bought his Finnlight for $1500.

LeBaron has been sitting on quite a few listed for $1500. Some other shop in Ontario was also clearing out some new models at $1200. Keep your eyes open to avoid the $1800+.

I think I would have a serious issue with buying a $1800 factory rifle, only to have to spend another $500 to replace the plastic, injection-moulded stock...

Could be worse...you could spend more on a Cooper synthetic and still get a lesser quality stock in comparison to a McMillan.

I know I said the "C" word and soon Whitetail Junkie will have his pics in this posting to...
