Has anyone found any decent synthetic aftermarket options for the 85?

Im gonna get a left hand action but im assuming I can work that out as long as they offer it.

You can order it right from McMillan and they have all the permits to ship it to you. Shipping isn't bad but you will wait 6-8 months for it. I had a couple of them on Sako 85's and they are worth the wait.

cool- whod you go for and what was the cost? I know them things aint cheap and theres gotta be some extra cost for us up here?

Figure on spending $570 US for an EDGE, to your door, not counting the taxes/fees Canada Customs can attach, which for you in AB would be 5% GST on declared value and a handling fee of around $25 or so. Not cheap, but you'll have the best synthetic stock out there. About $100 less for a regular McMillan.
My last one took 3 months exactly. (not Sako)

hrrrrrm....well, you only cry once, right? how do they stack up vs bell and carlson/similiar jobs?

My opinion; If you want the ultimate of lightweight and strength, then it's hard to beat the EDGE. If you're just looking for a quality synthetic and not really concerned about weight, there are lots of others out there, next in line I would place HS Precision.
Wildcat,Bansner,Brown's and a few others also make lightweight stocks, but they lack the solid feel of the McMillan. Bell and Carlson are OK, but feel clunky, I'd place them at the bottom of the "decent" aftermarket stock category.
You can also get McMillan's (not EDGE) in molded in colors, lots of combinations out there, just use google. Some look great, some are downright repulsive. :D

No comparison, IMO.

Also, I don't believe there is anyone else making a drop-in synthetic stock for an 85. You can get a blank one and do your own inletting or pay a smith to do it, but the cost won't be any less than an edge, and will take longer.

Here's a few I've had...

Whoo! Thems some beauties right there. good to know, cheers

I like the hunter stock. On my 75's they cut 10oz, but the 85 stock is lighter, only saves a few oz, but they are a lot stiffer than factory.

Nice. I especially like the olive-green stock in the middle.

I've been looking for a replacement stock for my Sako m85 SS Greywolf in .270 for quite a while.
(I've even got an WTB ad on EE in hope of finding a factory walnut stock for it, but zero replies).
So maybe I should consider a McMillan Edge? ... what, if any, might the weight saving be?

Sako pattern EDGE stocks weigh about 26 oz. Weigh your factory stock and see what the difference is.
