Sako 85 discontinued

I have a Sako Finnlight in 6.5 x 55 and a Black Bear in .308. Both are excellent rifles. Super accurate, ergonomic, great triggers and a pleasure to shoot. Smoothest bolt actions I have seen. Zero ejection issues. From what I have read, the cartridges with thicker rims have had some ejection issues. The .308 family and the 6.5 x 55 both have thick rims.

I have never been able to afford a Sako since the early 70's. Really nice actions back then... Had to get by with 700's since.

All of you who For those of you who say you do not have ejection issues. Check the bottom of your scope by your windage dial. If you have marks you have ejection issues. Properly designed action Should not cause any contact of a spent case with your scope. My Kimber shoots way better is 2 pounds lighter, Scope is mounted super low and I have 0 rejection issues

The Sako 85 I have, has had 5 different scopes on it and 14 hunting seasons and lots of trips to the range a cartridge has yet failed to eject.

The scopes were 3.5x10 Leupold, 2.5x10 Vortex, 6x42 Leupold, 6x SWFA, and Vortex 1x6, if there was to any problem it would be with the SWFA as the windage turret is big.

I had not noticed anywhere marks on the under side of the scope.

What I did notice is that if you gently pull the bolt back the case most likely fall back into the open action.

But , if you cycle the action like you mean it , then as good as any other bolt action I've used.

Good riddance. Sako produced some legendary sporting rifles over the years but the only thing the 85 will be mostly remembered for is the ejection issue.
I have personally owned a sample of one 30-06 Black bear that exhibited the issue...lost alot of money on that one.

Got 85's:

  • .30-06 Bavarian Carbine / Leupold VX-3 1.5-5x20mm
  • .300 Win Mag Grey Wolf / Leupold FX-II 6x36mm
  • .375 H&H Mag Kodiak / Leupold VX-2 Ultralight 3-9x33mm
All eject fine as in this video. Nice rifles.

Need an ostrich neck to use that scope setup. I prefer my objective 1/4" or less above the barrel. That looks like 3/4".

I have seen an 85 that would eject every case if you cycled hard, but the mouth of the case was oval from hitting the scope.

I have had a couple 85s for quite awhile now with absolutely zero issues(maybe I got lucky if so then so be it) there def not going anywhere for sure. Cheers

I will probably never buy a new sako rifle again. Stoeger Canada was a waste Of a breath. They don't stand behind their rifles they import. When I had the problem with the carbonlight They told me to keep putting the scope higher And when that didn't work they told me to buy a new scope. This was after my vx5hd was Dinged and damaged.

I remember a couple years ago when I had a problem with a set of optilock ring mounts. They machine them wrong and had The screw clamp on opposite sides. The front mount it was on the right side and the rear amount was on the left side. They told me that was normal but for peace of mind they will send me a new set. The new set they were on the same side. After contacting them again they told me that my set I sent in was exactly the same yet I had all the video and pictures to prove otherwise.

The ejection issue is real. More prominent in long action calibres. It seems less common is short action calibres. Its not a myth.

I haven't seen any evidence that Sako is phasing out the 85 at this time. Nor have I found a single reference to Sako models "90" and "100." Sako rifles still appear on dealers' shelves, and Stoeger Canada has indicated that they are receiving all the 85s they order. A couple of factors are at work here: (a) Sako's biggest sporting-rifle product these days is the lower-priced Tikka line, so that we'll see more Tikkas than Sakos, and (b) Sako has a new large military contract for the M23 that will undoubtedly be very profitable for the company. These developments, along with promoting the S20 line, have occupied Sako's attention and have meant fewer 85s in the pipeline. Of course, at some point, the 85 will be phased out, just as the L- and A-series Sakos and the 75s were, but I haven't seen any evidence that that point is now, although it's possible I've just missed it.

As for the ejection problems, I can only say that I haven't experienced these with my 85 in .270 Win. It ejects fine, and I have a low-mounted scope.

If there is some information about Sako "90" and "100" models, I'd be very interested in seeing it.

Would not surprise me at all that the 85 is replaced with a 100 model, as 2021 was the 100th anniversary of Sako.

1996 was the 75th and when the model 75 was introduced. 2006 was the 85th anniversary, and when the 75 was discontinued and the 85 introduced.
