i`m about to purchase a sako 85 finnlight in 30-06 mainly for moose hunting and possibly for deer hunting.....does anybody have any experience with this setup and if so how do u like it...will probably top it off with a leupold or zeiss....probably a 3-9 x 40.... thanks in advance

I got to borrow my buddy's Sako 85 finnlight this fall with a Leupold scope on. It however was in 7mm. It's an awesome setup. I'd love to have one these rifles but as far as I can tell they don't produce the 85 in a lefty model. Buy it. You won't regret it.

Great rifle, thou I do not own a Finnlight I do have several Sako m75 ss and Greywolf rifles....I do not care for the factory fluting compared to the work done by a gunsmith...trust me I have had a few Sako m75 rifles fluted.

Anyhow 30-06 with a premium 165-180gr bullet (Accubonds or TTSX's) and a Leupold VX2 3-9x40 or 4-12x40 and you are set!!! Nothing wrong wiht a Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9x40 or the Burris Ballistic plex scope either to save a bit. ME, I prefer and have all Leupolds myself.

Buy the rifle, and never look back !!

There is a reason why you almost never see them on EE... I don't own one but wish I did and someday I will. Probably I'll get one in .270 or 7mm-08

Tell you what, I wouldn't mind a .30-06 either so if you buy it and don't like it, PM me and I will give you 90% of what you paid (without taxes of course).

should i consider the laminated stock...i always lean towards synthetic personally for the look and durability....how is the recoil on the sakos that u own....and what is not good with the fluting

The fluting is just fine... get the synthetic stock if you want to sell it to me after, I agree with the durability consideration. It's a Finn"light" and as such, will be quite heavy on recoil. If it was the Finn"heavy", it would have less recoil. You can control the recoil marginally with lighter ammo but being a light gun, there are limitations. For a hunting gun, light is good. You won't be shooting dozens of rounds on a hunting trip so you should be able to survive the recoil for the few shots you need to take. It will be much nicer to lug around than a heavier rifle.

thats exactly why i want the finnlight...i will most likely acquire the prefit limbsaver recoil pad right away then set up my scope right after...i`ve debated setting it up with a new scope although i have a bushnell 3200 elite 3x9x40....just thought it might be time for something new....leupold perhaps

I would certainly get a great scope for the Finnlight. You don't put cheap hubcaps on a Porsche...they deserve nice rims. Nothing wrong with the Bushnell...on a Savage.

The good thing in all this is that you are in Grimsby. That means that when you sell me the Finnlight, I only need to drive 20 minutes to pick it up.

lol why do u think i will be selling u this finnlight...

I don't but in your original post you seemed hesitant. I only offered you a way out if you decide it wasn't right for you. Effectively, I made your decision that much easier. You can also slide it by the wife by telling her that you will get 90% of your investment back minimum if you don't like it after. You can say that you already have a buyer. See what I did there? it's a win-win...

hahaha very clever but my wife doesnt interfere with my guns lol but i do appreciate the offer however.....i ``should`` be heading to the store this weekend if all goes according to plan....love the finnlight and will most likely get that but still wonder about 30-06 which i know works b.c i had a tikka 06 in the past...but my benelli r1 is a 300wsm and i do love the ballistics of that round just not the recoil so much in a light bolt

I have a .270 but I have no interest in game larger than deer. In a pinch, the .270 will take any game in Canada. I think the .30-06 is very similar with the added versatility of going to heavier bullet weights if you focus towards the biggest game like moose & bear. I am also a recoil lightweight although I am developing up a tolerance. My shooting of rifles leans towards .223 at the range but I do shoot .308 out of a heavy barrel 700 5R without issue but it's heavy. I shoot pistols in .22 & 9mm most of the time but I do have a .44Mag 629 that I pull out whenever I need a fix or want to piss off the guy beside me.

good to know...i think i will end up with the finnlight in 30-06 because i know it will knock down a moose in a hurry with a well placed shot....i shot a calf a few years back and she fell down within 10 feet....i have a slip on limbsaver from my first tikka 30-06 so might just go with that...i do favor a nice leupold though....zeiss is a bit pricey and have heard amazing things from leupold owners...my dad has a vx-1 on his rifle and likes it...i sight it in for him mind u so i know its good glass

So you're going to pay ~$1800 for a barreled action? Think about that for a second. The stock is plastic and not worth anything. 85's are way over priced for what you get. The recoil "lug" is a joke for a $1800 gun. There are problems with ejection (just google sako 85 ejection problems) due to how the bolt is designed. Will have to mount your scope high or do silly things like rotate it 90 degrees. The magazine release is annoying.

You can buy a winchester m70 extreme weather that is more gun than the 85. Better stock, real CRF, integral recoil lug etc. If you are really hung up on weight you can sell the B&C stock off the extreme weather for real money and put it towards a mcmillan. You will still be several hundred under what the 85 cost you and have a better package. There are lots of options out there for the kind of money you are spending on a barreled action, since the stock probably cost Beretta $50 or less.

Of course you can do whatever you want with your money. I've had a Finnbear, two sako 75's (stupid key system on those but can be removed and still better than the 85), an A7 and have had hands on time with a 85 wood stocked that won't eject shells properly. They hit the bottom of the scope and fall back in the action. A7 did this too (270 wsm) with talley low rings.

Agreed on the cheap stocks, which is why mine all wear McMillans... The mag system is fine by me, and I've never paid $1800 for any Sako.

I do prefer the 75 though, so I'm currently running 3 of them and no 85's.

the tikka i had in 30-06 had no such problems at all...its the same action...i wonder why that is...hmmmmm

Not even close to the same action. It's the 3-lug bolt and the 6:00 standing ejector that causes the problems, and the Tikka has neither.
