Hey guys,

So I am looking at buying the Sako 85 Finnlight .300 win mag, but am wondering if anyone has shot it in the .300 win mag and has noticed any issues with it being a lighter gun...(kick, barrel jump...things like that) I was after the synthetic stainless but doesn't look like anyone is carrying or can get them anymore.

I have a .300 win mag rifle that is pretty light.

Laying down at the range, it is uncomfortable. Shooting more than 6 cartridges is painful.
Standing up it is okay. Tolerable.

TL;DR If you hunting, go for it. If you're planning on shooting this gun 20+ times in one sitting, get like a Savage 111 long range hunter, or something even heavier.

I had a 7mm mag in 85 finnlight and didn't like it. The recoil itself wasn't bad but the barrel lift was ridiculous. The worst part of my gun was that after two shots the barrel was extremely warm and follow up shots began to drift quickly. This was even after waiting a couple minutes between shots. I think the finnlight is a really nice gun...just not for magnum calibers.
 
I have .270 85 sako fin light to future proof my potential interest of hunting in ontario hunting. Only thing I noticed is I may have to change the stock. There is a gap distance between the butt of the gun and my shoulder so when I shoot off the bench the rifle does not sit well off. Had the gun fly back and the scope hit me right between the eyes. A nice bruise between the eyes and my dignity.

Looking to change stock or add recoil pad to lengthen the butt.
 
I have a Vanguard S2 in 300Win. It's 8.5lbs and hurts to shoot more than 5-6 rounds from the bench. Standing up, you know you pulled the trigger on something, but I could bounce a couple boxes off my shoulder without issues. I'd think with a lightweight rifle you be looking at some pretty decent recoil, get a limb-saver and a scope with 4-5 inches of eye relief and you should be ok, so long as your not pounding rounds off from the bench all day...

I have the same firearm and calibre, try the after market Sims recoil pad, it worked for me.
 
I own and love my 85 Finnlight in 270 wsm. Recoil is mild and the cartridge is fast and bullet weights of 130 to 150 offer plenty of smack for bear, elk, and moose.

I fired a friend's 85 Finnlight in 300wm, and it is unpleasant to shoot. Very accurate, and an excellent cartridge, but unpleasant recoil.

They're not really that light...The T3 is lighter, and I've had both...

Only works with the newer ST stock. The original 85 stock is curved at the butt...

I own a M85 Finnlight in 30-06. With max. loads of 180 to 220 grain bullets the recoil is about the limit of what I like. I also own a M70 Super Grade 300WSM which is much heavier. I find the WSM recoil (in this rifle) to be about the limit of what I find comfortable. Fifteen or twenty rounds at a session is my limit.

I also own a Remington 700 in 338 Win. Mag. It is actually more comfortable to shoot although I have to admit it has a muzzle brake.

I am in my late 70's so that may have a bearing on what I like to tolerate. For some one younger your MMV.

I have had my Sako m75ss 300WM new since 1997 and have no issues with recoil. I had my factory barrel fluted by a gunsmith when the rifle was new. The m85 Finnlight might be a few ounces lighter but not by much I would think.

IMO, if you think you may have issues with recoil, barrel jump, kick ---then I would suggest a smaller caliber to shoot in a Sako rifle (7mm-08 / maybe the 270WSM). Shooting caliber you think or may flinch will develop poor shooting habits.

If you want the 300WM , fill your boots !!

Stoeger Canada will know who has 300WM in the SS or Finnlight models in Canada. Contact them, they may be able to help you out.

I just seen on P & D Enterprises website (Site Sponsor) has a m85 Finnlight 300WM - used in EXC condition in their inventory....click on their link and give them a call.
 
I have a friend that has one of these rifles in the 300winmag and it is always fun to watch a 240# 6'4" guy wince after acouple of rounds. Hunting would be fine but he tries to keep up with the short action rifles at the bench. The muzzle lift is awesome to watch if he shoots off of the bipod and doesn't anchor the front down. After a day at the range we usually don't see the finnlight for a month or two.
 
I owned a 300 WSM that weighed 6.5 pounds before mounts and it was abrupt.

To me a 300 Win Mag is just right about 8.75 pounds with scope and a full clip.
