Sako 85 Kodiak. So I'm getting one of these now as I have been pondering the short barrel 338WM market for a bit and needed to fill that gap & my curiosity.
It has 21 1/4'' Barrel with open sights, barrel band sling swivel mount & all the regular Sako 85 stuff. When I get it I will attach some pics & get range report as there has been much speculation about the obvious Trajectory & Velocities of the shorter Barrel paired with a 338WM Chambering. I will try factory stuff first then get relaoding. Should arrive in about 2 to 3 weeks.

Should be a nice handling rifle...Still tips the scale at 8lbs though, with optilocks and a scope it will be near 10lbs loaded...:D

I have a Sako 85 Grey Wolf in 22-250 with the same barrel length when you measure from where the barrel stops at the action but that is not the correct way to measure the barrel you need to add about 1" for the threads/chamber I'm thinking it is 22" long.

Now back to the Grey Wolf my 22-250 is the most accurate rifle I have ever owned the action is glass smooth and the rifle is extremely fast handling only issue I may have is the heavy bolt lift after firing when you lift the bolt handle that is when the trigger is reset it isn't really an issue I'm thinking I'm just not used to the heavy lift yet.

I have also held a few of the Kodiak rifles and I'm totally impressed with them.

I'm not knocking it, I'd love to have one!:D

Lets see some range pics when you get to firing it...

You bet they said it would approx 2 weeks to arrive from the time it gets to the distributer which I think they said was in Whitby Ontario if I remember correctly, I'll be gone to work when it gets in but I'm pretty excited about this so I will follow up, Hey I cant find the Sako Optilock ""QD"" type bases & rings anywhere, you got any Ideas???

You better drive all the way down with your Chrony:eek:!!!!!! Just kiding I'll find one as I dont own one..............Yet!

The Shooting Chrony brand are made in Canada, and not very expensive, especially given the great info you can glean from knowing your exact velocities.

Alternately, you could drive up here to do your load testing LOL. Actually, I've only borrowed one from time to time, but plan on getting one soon.

As for the bases, did you try Bashaw, P&D and Russell's? Otherwise, perhaps Western Gun Parts...

Bashaw was first as that is where I'm getting the Gun as far as the others......No!

Well then, get after it! I suspect you'll find what you need at one of those places.

Otherwise, Leupold makes a QR base for Sako rifles: L53064 Gloss, or L53066 Matte. Korth has both in stock, so Pud should be able to get you those, and the rings to match.

Sako 85 Kodiak

I have a Sako 85 Kodiak on order and I just heard about the Sako Quick Detachable scope mounts.I'm looking at getting a Leupold VX-3 3.5-10x50mm in silver.I'm not sure if I will need the low or medium height mounts. If anybody got any suggestions about mounts/ scopes let me know before I order. Thanks

Leupold QR is a very good way on a Sako 85.

quick detach

I bought a kodiak in 375 H&H a few months ago. nice rig shoots great under 2" at 200 yds. I also was looking for the optilok quick detach. I couldn't find any. So i went with talley quick detach in 30mm medium. The work great and not near as big and bulky as optiloks. I put a leupold 3x9x40 european on mine

I'm thinking of buying the exact same gun for bison/grizzly but I have a "thing" for accurate tack-driving guns. I'm worried that the short barrel might mean that the gun might not be as accurate as what I'd expect from a Sako 85 (I have two others and both shoot subMOA).

The original poster said that he'd give a range report. I was wondering if he or others would be willing to share their experience with this rifle. Is it accurate? How's the recoil? Is it to heavy to carry for long? Is there a load it prefers? etc.
