Hi Everyone

Does anyone know if Sako makes the 85 in a left handed version yet? I have checked the Sako website and I don't think they do but they have made them before in the 75 etc. Thanks for your help.

Some time ago I contacted Sako to enquire about the availablity and/or production of a left hand bolt action rifle. This would be since the time that Beretta took over, and their response was that there were no immediate plans to build a Sako Rifle in a Left Hand bolt action Rifle. They directed me to buy a Tikka Rifle as that line of Rifle builds Left Hand Bolt action rifles in a variety of calibers. If memory serves me correctly, the Sako Model 75 was the last production rifle built by Sako in Left Hand bolt action. Having said that, it would be worth your time and effort to contact them and see if they are going to build Left Hand Bolt actions for their customers.

The Sako 75 is a better rifle, in any event, if you need a left hand rifle and can find one. That said, they should produce the 85 for southpaws too.

Somebody has to volunteer to contact Sako. Preferably in Finland to discuss the issue of producing Left hand rifles. I suspect Beretta in the U.S. will give the same answer they gave me a few years ago.

Sako 85 Left Hand yet?

Highwind,

it s made already : CNC plans and prototype but seems the head in Finland dont want to produce at least up to now ...

Good day medvedqc thanks for providing more recent information then what I provided. If you can, a link would be useful so some of the lefties could make enquiries about the commencement of production.

I'm not sure how SAKO came to the conclusion to produce Left hand actions, going back to at least the L-61 finbear. And I'm sure that they had a good many requests to do so, and had followed up with the demand at the time. We know that they continued producing left hand actions through to the model 75, and I suspect that's when beretta took over and didn't see the value in mantaining products for left handed shooters. I'm sure many would share the view that that decision was a mistake on their part. As we have to remember that the left hand market is world wide market. And there are so many calibers that have taken on new life, or have been reinvented in one way or another. Their are so many choices out there and the Long Range Hunting, Long Range Target and Reloading - markets are areas that are seeing growth; largely due to the internet and sharing of information.

It would be nice to know how many left hand actions SAKO actually produced in a variety of their designs and various calibers, over the years... I'm guessing that the most obvious were the 270 and 30-06. The 7mm RM would be up there too. They did make a shorter action that housed the 308 and affiliated calibers but I'm not too sure what the production numbers were. It would be nice to just to get a sense of how many may be out there floating around...???

If any gun production company is serious about securing new customers, then the left hand market is a good starting place for sales and growth. Every gun manufacturer is finding new ways to produce more accurate rifles so SAKO has already acheived that benchmark. So like so many other manufacturers they would have to decide where they want to focus their efforts now.

If you find any more information related to this discussion, I'd certainly be interested in reviewing it.

Funny, I was looking for a LH Sako Hunter 85 online last night.

I don't like the look of the Tikka or that it only takes 3 rounds.

I want a LH rifle in .30-06 that takes 5 rounds in the magazine and has open sights too. I'd really like it to have a charging bridge for strippers clips as well.

I contacted CZ-USA just before Christmas and inquired about a LH CZ 550, but they replied that they have no intention of producing one and are gearing up to produce a new push-feed model the CZ 557.

It doesn't sound like much of an improvement to me: http://www.ammoland.com/2010/11/09/cz-557-sporter-30-06-bolt-action-rifle/

Hey Guys

Thanks for the info and the hope that in a couple years they will be available. I don't understand either why they haven't gotten to a LH 85 yet at least in the most popular calibers. I am sure that they would have immediate orders for one. Please keep my posted with any more details.
