Sako 90 Reviews

I have 85s and 90s, and a couple different Bavarians in the mix. One of my favourites is an 85 Bavarian Carbine, very accurate and a classy appearance. The downside is the low comb of the stock if the plan is to add an optic and as well the felt recoil. The comb on the 90 Bavarian remains the same as that of the 85.

With a scope, be prepared for a chin weld which takes some getting used to as it is not as stable as a proper cheek weld. The other difficulty is the felt recoil due to the design of the stock. The dropped comb or "hog's back" tend to snap or jump. Even standard cartridges like a 308, 270, or 30-06 can have an unpleasant kick due to the lack of a real recoil pad.

The core design is almost unchanged since the last 30 years, basically it’s a 75/85 with a more standard scope mounting provision.

The bolt face and ejection changed a lot between the 75-85-90. The 85 has a flush bolt face, to make it sort of a CRF, and an Mauser style ejector at 6 o'clock. The 75 has a conventional recessed bolt face and plunger ejector. The 90 gets two plunger ejectors. The 90 also went to a 2 piece bolt, for God knows what reason. The Sako bolt being machined from a 1 piece forging was a point of pride for the Sako factory.
